Having led a life packed with drama and a career full of headlines, the irony wasn’t lost on anyone that Occy’s final exit from competitive surfing was mundane at best. After losing to Troy Brooks in Round 3 of the Pipe Masters, he was carried up the beach on the shoulders of his countrymen, and into the record books for retiring as the oldest competitor on the WCT. Occ’s story and amazing comeback to take the title in 1999 at the age of 33 really is the stuff of legends. And now as he makes the transition from competitive surfer to icon, we can only hope that the rest of his life is fit for the king he is.
