Good post. I hadn’t seen this article; may have to rethink my next trip to Mexico. Damn bandidos!

Now I am worried about our next trip in May. We have been going there for the past three years and never made any negative experiences. But we have a little boy and crimes like that get me worried, especially when I think that my husband will be in the water and I am on the beach with my son.

Surfers coming into a 3rd world country rife with unemployment and all that goes with that (e.g., poverty), and coming down, as one of the interviewees mentions in the NY Times article, “driving luxury vehicles, carrying wads of cash” or flashing wealth via electronic toys and surprised one gets assaulted; well, duh. Yes, come on down, but be aware, have economic consciousness, do your homework, then bliss out on some bodacious surfing. word.
