In 2002, Steve Barilotti penned an article for Surfer Magazine entitled “The Jungle is Looking Back,” wherein Dr. Dave Jenkins recounts his experience traveling to the Mentawai Islands,but when he when went ashore he discovered malaria stricken villages.
Moved by the story and the affliction of Malaria on the Mentawai villagers, Reef Sandals co-founder, Santiago Aguerre worked to establish a fundraiser for SurfAid. Santiago reiceved the 2013 SIMA Humanitarian of the Year Award.
To date, the SIMA Humanitarian Fund has raised over $1.58 million for Humanitarian causes.

Waves for Water’s mission is to provide clean drinking water for everyone who needs it. Led by Hurley, traveling surfers provide locals water filters and educate them about sourcing clean water.

Surfer’s Healing provides the unique and therapeutic experience of surfing to children facing autism at no charge to the families. The foundation has increased autism awareness from their great events and media attention.
SurfAid International’s mission is to improve the health, wellbeing and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing.
The Keep A Breast mission is to help eradicate breast cancer by exposing young people to methods of prevention, early detection and support.
Life Rolls On Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for young people affected by spinal cord injury and utilizes action sports to demonstrate the infinite possibilities beyond paralysis.
Stoked Mentoring’s mission is to promote personal development, academic achievement and healthy living to under-served youth through action sports culture.
Outdoor Outreach is a San Diego-based organization with a mission to empower at-risk and underprivileged youth to make positive, lasting changes in their lives through comprehensive outdoor programming.
The JMMF provides free Ocean Therapy to the United States Marine Corps.
