Laguna Beach has a history of producing surf pioneers and core companies who can claim their products are “Made for surfers, by surfers.” Dustin Pettit is a Billabong’s boardshort designer, surfer, artist and Laguna Beach native. His art was on display at Second Reef Surfshop, a legendary haven for local surfers, and named after the local reef that is home to the oldest surf contest in the USA.
The party went down during Laguna Art Walk, when every first Thursday of the month the art community comes alive with a soulful exhibits and open bars at every door. The coldies flowed well into the evening as the crew enjoy the sounds of Leslie Lowe, until the crowd migrated to the infamous Sandpiper Lounge aka “The Dirty Bird.” So if your ever passing through Laguna-town, stop into Second Reef Surf Shop on Thalia and PCH, say what-up to Bradley and tell them SWELL sent ya.
Dustin Pettit’s art portrays his vivid, colorful, and somewhat vulgar eye. His raw, energetic and spicy approach to art is only surpassed by his radical surfing that he’s polished in the break just down from Second Reef.
His boardshort designs are influenced by the trinkets he’s collected along his many surf trips. Here you see the progression of a boardshort design made from woven bracelets picked up in Mexico.
