#SWELLivin: Smile.

Remember to look up and smile.

Sometimes the best ideas just hit you over the head out of nowhere, and really are quite simple. Such is the case with my beloved Palm Tree smile artwork, photo/design/ whatever you want to call it.

If you happen to get the SWELL catalog this month, a post card, that you can keep around as a smile inducer, juuuuust might happen to fall out, surprise you as you turn the pages, or arrive in your mailbox if you have a cool thoughtful friend who wants to brighten your day.

So, I figured I’d let you all in on the story behind the design that’s been making the rounds. Because I kind of love it.

In Hawaii, the beach park by my house had a gorgeous palm tree (one of the tall skinny swaying ones) that I’d go sit under after a long day, or just to take a nap, read a book, etc. I always took a bunch of pics of it, especially at sunset, because it would be a perfect silhouette. The tree (and palm trees in general) made me smile. Then I realized, in the pics where it was just the tree, well, heck it could double as the letter i. The tree made me smile, it’s also an i. Yhatzee, we have a winner.  I made the graphic and posted it.  No more lonely palm tree pic, and instead it’s something that is making people smile all over.

SWELL Eats: Watermelon Batido

There is something about fruit and summer that makes the best combination EVER. After warm sunny days at the beach, a cold drink and fruit is all that I crave. Naturally, fruit drinks are a must! One of my favorite warm weather drinks is a Watermelon Batido. This Costa Rican style smoothie is light, refreshing, and naturally sweet. It’s the perfect drink for a hot summer day and the best part is that it’s extremely easy to make. This recipe only has three ingredients (two of which are water). So get your blender out and try one of these healthy and delicious summertime drinks!

INGREDIENTS:
2 Cups Chopped Watermelon (rinds removed)
1 Cup Ice
¾ Water

DIRECTIONS:
Blend, serve, Enjoy!!

SWELL Eats: Broccoli Slaw

Forth of July is just about here and I’m sure many of you will celebrate with a 4th of July BBQ or two. One of my fav things to bring to group events or barbeques is something that may sound kinda weird at first…Broccoli Slaw. Yes, I’m talking about cole slaw made with (gasp) broccoli! Now let me tell you, this not your grandma’s coleslaw, drenched in nasty mayo and who knows what! This slaw is much healthier and it’s so yummy that it doesn’t even taste like broccoli. Added bonus: This coleslaw is super quick to prepare and you can easily find all of the ingredients at most supermarkets. and you will never have to work out that much either.

…Hope that makes sense.

If not… here are a few examples of active things to love that also happen to get your heart pumping and keep your body active: Surfing, SUP, kayaking, paddling, running, walking, dancing, zumba, pilates, hiking, biking, boxing, yoga, skating, climbing, swimming, soccer, basketball, tennis, even golf (walking the course, sorry carts take away the cardio)…just to name a few. Figure something out, and working out will turn into something you get to do, rather than are forced to do.
