Since he triggered the chop-tail trend with his advent of “The Dumpster Diver” Dane Reynolds and Al Merrick have been knee deep in foam dust experimenting with more ultra-modern templates.
Dane’s mysto shaping expertise was put to the test in France after his DFR snapped in the semi-finals and was left with his 100% hand shaped board seen in this video. He shredded it to a come-from-behind victory against the lethal John Florence in the dying minutes of the heat.
Even though he lost to Slater in the finals at Hossegor, Daynolds’ fellow CI team rider took a page out of his own playbook to beat him. Slater actually used the new DFR aka “Dane Freaking Reynolds” signature model in his recent back to back tour victories.
The DFR is the latest evolution template that began with the Dumpster Diver, then Neck Beard, the Double Helix, the Sperm Whale, and the Wave Bandit. Dane Reynolds and Volcom‘s Andrew Doheny are currently the only two touring surfers to have success riding self shaped boards, and Dane’s model has earned multiple SIMA awards for “Surfboard of the Year.”
Dane cracked the code of creating an outline with short rail line that still maintains aggressive drive in variable conditions. The outline puts most of the width and volume towards the front of the board to float your girth and get you down the line. Its no secret that Dane packs on his beer weight, but the sharp flip in the exit rocker allows that patented release through the lip. See the whole Channel Islands board room at SWELL.

In honor of International Left Handed Day, Quiksilver released a mirrored edit of a Slater highlight reel showing the champ surfing as if he were a goofy- footer. Nobody would dare say he wouldn’t have captured as many victories at natural-footer favoring venues like Snapper and J-Bay, but it would have at least evened the playing field.
Unsurprisingly, Kelly is actually a talented switch-foot surfer. In-fact, he and Shane Dorian used to surf first switch on the first wave of their head to head heats.
Today, Kelly is equip to pull any trick out of the book in order to bag a 10 point ride in a heat. The 40 yr old reigning world champ will tell you that attention to detail has been the difference in his career. His signature Cypher Kelly Nomad boardshorts give him the agility and performance to stay a step ahead of the high flying youngsters gunning for his throne.
His favorite boardies are only $30 for this week only, that’s 55% OFF! Get the lowest price of the year here
Remember when Paul Fisher was yelling at Slater with a megaphone from the HB pier during the US Open? Well, this would be a solid video to play a joke on that Aussie heckler.
The timeless and carefree style of Craig Anderson is an enigma. In and out of the water, he effortlessly out-surfs anyone and looks damn good doing it. A driving force of the Modern Collective progressive surfing boom, this Aussie/Saffa represents a new breed of free surfers with fresh styles.
Craig “Ando” Anderson has spent the last few years circling the globe with his fellow Quik free-surfers like Dane, Ry and Clay. From his Surfing Mag covershot at Greenbush, to his Punt of the Month, everyone’s trying to understand how this hair-farming ripper makes it look so easy.
Craig explains his approach to surf and style “To me, good style is about being in tune with the ocean, timing, nonchalance, vision, and just being relaxed. Everyone’s style is gonna be different. It’s all about being comfortable and enjoying what you like and everyone has a different take on what they enjoy”
Since becoming Quiksilver’s global poster-boy, his new school style influenced the latest cuts and colorways.
Here’s his go-to essentials he takes on his year-round travel benders:
1. Pocket Tee -Usually basics, but just anything without loud logos. Doubles as a surf top
2. Tight Pants– “I like that steez” -Ando
3. Cloth Trucker -Stylish sun protection is a must on the road, and also hides your nappy mop that hasn’t seen shampoo in days
4. Electric Sunglasses -He prefers contemporary twists on wayfarers. Kip Arnette hooks him up
5. Backpack -Boardbags require hands-free cargo. Stash some clothes with your boards if you need more space.
6. Boardshorts – The signature Ando Flint boardshort design is an extension of his surfing style: A retro outline with new-school flare and gravity defying agility. The 4-way stretch Diamond Dobby fabric wont rip when you’re shredding your hardest.
The Cypher Brig boardshort takes performance to the next level for when Craig really gets acrobatic. A favorite short for Dane Reynolds, Ando and him share a similar lazy yet explosive style.
This basic yet enigmatic look and lifestyle has got Craig some very positive feedback from the ladies, so reinvent your steez with new Quik gear here
