Get creative! You don’t have to wear a bikini or boardshorts underwater. Try out an aloha shirt for a guy or a flowy skirt on a lady. When you want to step up your creativity grab some props! My personal favorite is a sarong or long, sheer piece of fabric. It adds a little texture and cool movement in my photos. (But please be safe! Only wear light clothing that won’t hinder your movement.)

Focusing on your subject underwater can be tricky. I like to use the “AI Servo” setting on my Canon (“Continuous/AF-C” on Nikons). This mode of focus is the best for underwater because it actively focuses on moving subjects. If you or the subject moves, this mode will automatically readjust focus. Since it s nearly impossible to stay still underwater, I guarantee you will need the help of the Continuous/AI Servo focus mode.

For those of you using an underwater housing, ever have trouble with water spots? to get that perfect half-in-half-out photo, without water spots, the best thing to do is use your spit! It sounds gross…but it works! Spit on the housing’s port and give it a good lick to distribute the spit!

Take some free diving lessons. Or at least get some practice in – simply working on holding your breath and getting out in the water counts as practice. The more you work on improving your free diving skills, the more time you’ll have underwater. The more time you have underwater, the better your chances are of getting the perfect photograph.
