Don’t be afraid to move around in the water as the photographer! When I started out taking photos underwater, I realized I was staying in one place, trying to get the exact shot I had in mind. I would then be disappointed if the photo wasn’t exactly what I had envisioned. I now realize if I move around constantly rotating around my subject to shoot at multiple angles, I am far more satisfied with the outcome.

As with taking photos on land, if you are shooting with natural light and want your subject lit well and not as a silhouette, make sure the sun is behind you! But, if the sun is not at a lower angle closer to the horizon, ask your model to look up to the surface to have the sun light up their face!

Don’t be afraid to play with foreground. A lot of people get caught up in the best background for a photo.
Often, people underestimate the effect an object in the foreground can have. I like to capture moments when schools of fish are swimming between myself and the model, or have a model explore around some coral heads that lie between us.

To add movement in a photo, I previously suggested using a long skirt or a sarong. This time, I challenge you to use props from the natural environment. For example, sand can create a really cool effect in a photo. Have your model scoop as much sand as possible in their hands and twirl it around playfully.
