As with taking photos on land, if you are shooting with natural light and want your subject lit well and not as a silhouette, make sure the sun is behind you! But, if the sun is not at a lower angle closer to the horizon, ask your model to look up to the surface to have the sun light up their face!

Don’t be afraid to move around in the water as the photographer! When I started out taking photos underwater, I realized I was staying in one place, trying to get the exact shot I had in mind. I would then be disappointed if the photo wasn’t exactly what I had envisioned. I now realize if I move around constantly rotating around my subject to shoot at multiple angles, I am far more satisfied with the outcome.

Don’t be afraid to play with foreground. A lot of people get caught up in the best background for a photo.
Often, people underestimate the effect an object in the foreground can have. I like to capture moments when schools of fish are swimming between myself and the model, or have a model explore around some coral heads that lie between us.
