You know those days where you have a lot on your plate but all you desire is getting in the water for a surf? But low and behold you show up and it’s flat and blown to smithereens. Suddenly your mind flashes back to your to-do list and excuses start flowing. You just have to go for it though.
There has hardly been a time when I went surfing in less than ideal conditions and felt worse than before I went. No matter how tired you are or how many excuses you have, just getting in the water will recharge you and make you happy you went after all. Regardless of conditions, the ocean has a way of supporting us, so do what you gotta do, but don’t forget to get wet somewhere along the way.

What does it take to make a new year the best year yet? For me it includes more adventures, new & improved relationships, ultimate health, and success that breaks records of the triumphs from years before. That all sounds fine and dandy but if you’re like me wondering how it’s all going to get done, remember that big leaps start with small steps. Number one resolution rule: Set attainable and sustainable goals. Here’s what we have to do to achieve our most important, yet challenging goals to make 2014 the best year yet.

About seven years ago, I made a huge decision that really changed the way I viewed working out. I decided to work out for my health, instead of looks. It was one of the best decisions of my life. The more I focused on trying to be healthy and take care of my body, instead of trying to look like someone else, or achieve a magic number on a scale, is when everything started to fall into place. You realize working out is all about health, longevity and happiness, not about six packs, and selfies.
So, I say choose to workout for a bunch of reasons (I listed a few above. Google “health benefits of working out” and be prepared for over a weeks worth of reading), but please, pretty please, stray from working out in order to look like someone else, especially if that someone is in a photoshopped pic.

Here are a few suggestions:
Travel somewhere new, take an art class, take any kind of creative class, get certified in diving, learn to salsa dance, do a ton of DIY’s, find a new hobby, volunteer, volunteer some more, ride your bike more, walk more, start a garden, get a dog, rescue a dog, surf as much as possible, take a few road trips, do your first triathlon, smile more, dish out random acts of kindness…
If you think about it, there is a lot you can do with 356 days.
So, enjoy the clean slate and exhilarating feeling of a brand new year, then go do something (big or small) with it.
