The Dream Tour starts a new season this week at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, and the ASP Board of Directors once again ratified tour qualifications and personal conduct regulations. Pay close attention because your fantasy surfer team could live or die by the new rules… and in the SWELL fantasy league the losers pay their dues
Before we begin speculating about the craziness about to unfold on the goldy, where’s how the new regulations will affect this year’s World Championship Tour:
- Random Drug and Alcohol Testing -High paying corporate sponsors means high expectations for surfers not to show up high
- No Mid-Year Cut – Could it be true…Bobby Martinez’s vulgar rants actually made a difference?
- 1 yr vs 52 week rolling qualifying point total -This one actually benefits Nate Yeomans (opposed to rule #2)
With most surfers approving the new ASP rules (Wilco must have been “out to brunch”) the stage is set to kick off the season at head-high Snapper Rocks on Saturday morning. Like every year, nobody knows how committed Kelly is to a full year on tour but his first event results always tells us if he’s more interested in chasing swells or titles. Check out the gear Slater uses here.
Other storylines evolving in the twelve day boardriding festival are: the participation of free surfing freak Dane Reynolds who claims he is “Blown talent and would rather sit at home and play with crayons and ride f*cked up boards“, the one year anniversary of women’s high-performance surfing arriving on the world stage, and Wolfmother performing for the crazed Aussies occupying Coolangatta.
For those of you familiar with online fantasy sports, Fantasy Surfers follows the same best team wins format… SWELL’s league doesn’t. While all SWELL fantasy players meticulously factor every element in drafting surfers, top scoring teams merely get bragging rights. It is the losing team who must endure humiliating hazes. Punishments a cruel as 24hrs with a U-Lock for bikes, locked around the neck were dealt last year. See the video recap of the loser.
If you’d like to join SWELL’s fantasy surfer league, sign up here, and we will award savvy surf fans, while you get to watch us punish eachother for losing here in San Clemente. Each event prize ranges from $25 in SWELL product, to bigger gear jackpots.

A weird week in the surf world brought us unseasonably epic weather and surf, but an untimely loss of a legend. Read what our favorite folks to follow had to say over the holiday, and keep up with SWELL’s steady stream of twitterrhea.
We all owe Sean Collins a debt of gratitude for opening the doors to one of the most elusive wonders of the world… good waves. His untimely passing took a huge toll on the surfing world, and the gift of Surfline he left behind will be daily reminders of his greatness.
Celebrate his life at the memorial paddle out, Sunday, January 8th at 11AM. Throw flowers from the pier or suit up and enjoy the waves.
Impostor or not, @Daynolds’ “blunt” honesty and humorous self portrayal explains why Dane Reynolds is the 5th most talked about surfer in the media. But how can a guy bite the hand that feeds him, quit the tour, and still land 7 figure contracts? Well, maybe we’re all sarcastic punks who glorify apathy, and destined to grow musty neckbeards.
Last night’s Surfer Poll Awards celebrated the year’s standout performances in the world of surf. Instead of rating surfers for their contest results, Surfer Magazine tallies the votes from fellow surfers and fans voting online. Criterion usually encompasses style and personality in and out of the water…and the awards show had plenty of both.
With the buzz from the richter scale swell due to detonate on the opening day of tomorrow’s Pipemasters, nervousness and gitters added to the pressures of speaking to the crowd of over 1,000 legendary attendees. Security was tight, but any north shore security guard gets distracted by hot chicks just long enough to slip past. Peligroso tequila loosened up the nominees, and the speeches ranged from shy, to high, and hilarious.
Emcees Sal Masacala, and Freddy Pattachia didn’t hold back any punches as they used the industry’s inside jokes against everyone on stage. Carissa Moore dedicated her award to WCT mens surfer Dusty Payne, and the gal pal jokes kept coming. But he wasnt the only super fan of the womens tour, many speakers mentioned their displeasure of not having a Womens Triple Crown of Surfing on the in Hawaii this year.
The big suspense of the evening was whether Dane Reynolds or Kelly Slater would take the No.1 prize, but Dane settled for second yet again. All awaited his quirky, awkward comedy relief and he didn’t disappoint, ” I surfed pipeline today…that was a humbling experience. I saw the Pipemasters heat draw today…that was also quite humbling. Jamie (O’Brian -Pipemaster) have mercy on my soul, please. Thanks to everyone who voted for me because lets face it, I’ve made it pretty hard to be a fan of me this year.” Dane also took the award “Best Digital Short” for his aptly named flick “Lost Interest” shot during his no-show period on tour this year.
Kelly accepted his 17th poll-topping award, thanking the Miller family, cracked what we think is a joke, then gave his expert analysis the conditions for the 2011 Pipemasters, “I saw Jamie O’Brian at pipe today and he said if WaveJet paid him 20K, he’d surf their motorized surfboard during the conteest. But, there’s about 100 ft of sand on the reef that shouldn’t be there. Hopefully it get washed away before the swell, because right now the wave doesnt know where to go.”
After the show, everyone headed over to the new Surfer Magazine bar at the Turtle Bay Resort where the girls again stole the spotlight…this time on the dancefloor.

A lot of us here were pretty bummed we couldn’t attend the Rip Curl Search San Francisco. With Dusty’s shark sighting, the raw Nor Cal surf, and the embarrassing double crowning of Kelly, this was definitely a memorable event. Fortunately a good friend of ours, Gabriel Valencia, sent us some shots he took while roaming the grounds of OB. His vivid pics seem to capture the vibe that was somehow lost through the live feeds and recaps. Enjoy the shots above compliments of Gabby and let us know what you think in the comments below!
