A Slice of Life: Meditation Gardens

swamis1
I’ve grown up surfing at the famous Swamis, known for its reeling rights, beautiful cliffs, and of course – the Self Realization Fellowship (hence the name, Swamis). The SRF welcomes people of any religion, faith, or belief system to walk through the Encinitas temple’s beautiful meditation garden. The garden is intended to be a place where guests can cleanse their minds of stress and worry, while taking the time to sit and enjoy some peaceful self-reflection. Plus, there’s a pretty great view of Swamis and Boneyards – just in case you want to check the surf while meditating.

#SWELLivin

Swell_lemons_69-645
You’ve heard the sayings, when life gives you lemons…make lemonade, a lemonade vodka, gin & tonic, lemon bars, (usually it’s something food or beverage related). Well one of the single best mood lifters for me, is surfing. Maybe not at Malibu with 600 people on a weekend when there is a swell, but most of the time, it makes me feel better, puts things into perspective, is a stress relief, calms me down, makes me smile, and is my go to happy pill. In fact when I am feeling down, (or like lemons are belong chucked at me from all angles) 98% of the time it’s because I haven’t been in the water enough.

So I say, the next time life gives you lemons, squeeze one of them in your hair, and go for a surf.

Maybe you’ll even score some free highlights. More likely from the sun and saltwater though, since the lemon juice will probably rinse off when you hop in the water.

Kayak Back and Shoulder Workout A series on finding adventure, stoke, and a killer workout in the Great Outdoors by Johnie Gall

Here’s the thing about gyms: we don’t get along. Throw me into a place with four walls, treadmills and grunting men in tank tops and I’ll be practically clawing at the windows to escape. Nope, I’d rather spend that monthly fee on gear that gets me outside, into the sunshine and onto the water. And you know what? Playing in the Great Outdoors is the best exercise you can get (I didn’t believe it until I took my marathon-running friend on a steep hike—she told me she’d never had such an intense cardio session and her buns burned for days!).
