One of the easiest ways to burn more calories and be healthier, is by choosing to use your own two feet and walk. Elevators, cars, and escalators, although quite convenient, steal the calorie burning potential that walking so easily provides. Ahhh, the nerve of technology.

If you can walk somewhere instead of driving, do it. If there is a beach, park, lake or trail nearby, go for a quick walk. If you can take the stairs, do it. If an escalator is broken and temporarily stairs, count it a blessing. I am that gal in the airport always taking the stairs with my carry on, that gal who suggests walking to lunch, and that gal who goes for a walk on the beach any chance she gets, rain or shine. And I have no shame in admitting it.

So the question is…where are you walking today?

Running in the rain is one of my favorite past times. It really is like exercise, therapy, and a shower, all balled up into one refreshing amazing experience. Actually, if you think about it, running in less than ideal conditions has a bit of a Rocky-Balboa-I’m-hardcore element to it, and it’s an ultimate stress reliever. Some of my favorite runs were done in a deluge (yes, an ipod died), late at night or early in the morning before the sun came up (on well lit streets), in the snow (even though I didn’t go fast), or my favorite…barefoot, while it’s drizzling and foggy on the beach (thank you Cannon Beach).

Be a sunset watcher.

Once, I was traveling in the Greek Isles and was staying at a hostel. I realized it was almost sunset time, and something in my DNA said, “hey you’d better figure out a way to go watch it.” Everyone else was partying, eating, or hanging out in the common room, but I found my way to the roof and watched one of the most spectacular sunsets during my time there. There were two other people on the roof:  an employee at the hostel, and another traveler (I think from the Czech Republic or something). The employee turned to us two lone travelers, and told me something I still haven’t forgotten: “You are either a person who watches sunsets, or you aren’t. I’m so glad that you made the effort.”  It was in a thick Australian accent too. ‘Twas quite poetic. (more…)

Do you have a hobby? It’s one of the best things you can have. No joke.
My definition of hobby: Something you love to do, that gets you moving, makes you forget about your stresses, makes you laugh, makes you have something to get better at, gives you goals, and it really really makes you happy, even without you realizing it.

To be blunt, they are a pretty big deal.

One of my favorites is golfing. As long as it’s at a course that doesn’t have a strict dress code. Then it’s an extra sweet hobby. If it’s a course where I can go barefoot and wear a bikini, an über sweet one.

So, if you don’t have one, giddy up. It’s time to go out and play.
