When the world tour came to the home of “The Brazilian Airforce”, many expected the local young punters to air-reverse their way to a brazo-heavy final, but it was all Aussies and a Hawaiian into the Semis at the 2012 Billabong Rio Pro. The precise tube riding and fine tuned gear of these top ten ranked surfers continued to show why they are perennial title threats .
Adrian “Ace” Buchan (World #8) came out firing in round one, taking out event favorite Gabriel Medina and progressive rookie Yadin Nicol. Ace relies on Hurley’s Phantom stretch technology for maximum stretch and lightweight performance when he unleashes his combinations of signature power hacks. This 60s Block Party style combines a rigid waistband with the 4-way stretch material that has made this patented Hurley technology the surf industry’s best boardshort for 4 years. Unfortunately Adrian fell to an in-form Jeremy Flores, but we look forward to his front-hand attack at Tavarua during next month’s Volcom Fiji Pro. Get Ace’s style – Hurley.
Owen Wright (World #10) was another Australian who smoked a local hero Raoni Montieri, and out-gunned past Brazil winner Taylor Knox. Owen owes it to Rip Curl’s Mirage Flex technology for sticking those tricky vertical re-entries and stomping airs. For such a big guy, it’s important that Owen’s shorts offer minimal resistance and weight in such a tricky beachbreak. Owen went down to quarter finalist Tiago Pires in a wonky, stormy and low scoring 3rd round affair. Get this Rip Curl technology
John John Florence (World #5) stole the show with buzzer beater barrels against Julian Wilson, and two no-grab 360 airs to win the final over current world #1 Joel Parkinson. John’s hot streak continues in his signature Epic Stretch trunks that contain elastane stretch fabric for his freakish abilities above and beneath the lip. He has been wearing this lucky style ever since his historic run to become the youngest Triple Crown Champion in 2011. He’s another goofy-footer that is poised to place high in the upcoming Volcom Fiji Pro. Get John John’s signature style here
Parko (World #1) surpassed the sidelined Slater in the rankings with his second place result. Joel made it through four extremely close heats decided by only fractions of a point (0.4, 0.7, 1.3, 0.83) In a game of inches, Parko trusted the super-stretch panels of the Flux boarsdshort, and the good karma of this recycler series style. Regardless of skill level, no grom-hood is complete without a party-wave filled surf camp. Learning your shrediquette from a legendary local instructor is a crucial step towards parent-free beach days and earning your spot in the line-up. So Listen up parents, even if you dont live by the beach, send your kids to a surf camp. They will return with the confidence and strength that no other recreation provides.
Billabong camps are famous for featuring local pros and epic surf ambassadors to teach the next generation of surfers how to do it in style. Here’s two Bong camps that have been spreading stoke to thousands of aspiring surfers.
Voted as Orange County’s Best Surf Coach (OC Weekly 2011) Stephen “Slidawg” Chew guarantees to get your grommet up on some Hakama peelers. For 20 years the camp has been perched in the epicenter of Laguna’s surf community at Thalia Street where campers have their pick of Reef rights, sandy lefts and shore-break mini-tubes.
1) The camp starts at 9am with some serious instruction about ocean safety from the certified surf instructors.
2) Next the trainees learn the rules of the reef, proper paddling, duck diving and getting to your feet.
3) Softboards and suits are provided, but bringing yours is a good opportunity to get more familiar with your sled.
4) The fun doesn’t stop at the sand, they get daily grinds at a local eatery, and the kids are hooked up with a Billabong backpack filled with swag from the top names in surf. Camp ends at 2pm.
5) Sign up before June 25 and save 20%. (more…)
After a year of everyone stealing slivers of Fu Wax from friends returning from Brazil, super gooey surf wax is now available from your favorite domestic wax makers.
Adriano de Souza sticky little secret was out after Taj, Luke Davis and Slater returned from Brazil comps with kilos of Fu Wax, and they weren’t eager to share. Perpetual hater, Jamie O’Brien and Kolohe had their doubts but the proof is in the pudding, and this stuff will turn into it when left in the sun. It’s not too much of a stretch to link Kolohe’s epic tear to make the tour with punt wax. Right when he became a believer, he started “sticking” every damn air in the book, and consequently dominated consecutive contest in his improbable road to qualification.
Watch and learn as the Sticky Bumps gurus put punt wax to the test.
Skeptics bitch about messy goo that coats anything it touches, and the Velcro bond it makes to your chest while paddling. Those claims have some validity, but a small price to pay once you pop up, “Even though I get a Brazilian wax job before every wave, it feel like there’s foot straps on. I’ve been able to ride out of some shit I never thought I’d land before” claims Bill Laity, SWELL’s surf enforcer.
1. Surf Shirt: In a recent trip to Puerto we surfed with the Billabong Skulldrag, avoiding painful wax in the chest hair and it even helped stay positioned on your board.
2. Wax Case: 2 SWELL employees have fallen victim to a full wax melt-down in their backpack and boardshorts. It completely melts in about about 20 minutes at 80F heat. Box it up with this case from Sticky Bumps, and even if it melts, you can throw it in the fridge and pop it out of the mold then re-use. It also comes with a costum sharped toothed comb to avoid a bead-less top-coat.
