Raptoberfest -Rise Against Plastic With Surfrider
October is “Rise Above Plastics” Month, or Raptoberfest: a month long campaign to identify the harms of plastics and implement solutions to this global pollutant. Every year the Surfrider Foundation mobilizes their team of passionate watermen to create rad ideas to help you reduce your plastic footprint.
Surfers see the harms of plastics firsthand, with one million seabirds and one hundred thousand marine mammals washing up dead from ingestion or entanglement in plastics each year. This prompted surf companies like Billabong, Hurley and Element to manufacture surfwear with upcycling, by building spent plastics into products of greater quality than before. So while most beach lovers try to Rise Against Plastics every month, the surf industry dedicates October to make this a mainstream ideology.
The Annual Surfrider Event has been instrumental in achieving:
-Banning the Bag in many Ca cities, Portland and internationally
-Impactful research about the Pacific Garbage Patch
-Innovative reducing & recycling solutions.
