Duncan Macfarlane

As always, this year’s Follow The Light awards proved hard to judge according to master of ceremonies Aaron Chang. Staged in the heart of the US Open at the Shorebreak hotel in Huntington beach, five hand picked, budding surf photographers presented their portfolios in front of surf industry icons and a panel of judges. With each picture more stunning than the next, it was a difficult task to select the “best” photographer from such varied styles and landscapes.

While the tallies were close across the board, Matt Kurvin ultimately won the People’s Choice award for, among other things, his remarkable photos of backwash pounded surf. When these images escaped the projector, Oooh’s and Aaah’s were given as if fireworks had gone off in the room. The Santa Cruz based Floridian was awarded a total of $1500 for his mind-tripping photography.

For the main prize the timid and shaggy haired Australian Duncan Macfarlane won over the panel with his eclectic mix of progressive surfing, unique perspectives, and varied use of lighting. He walked away with the $5k grant and the prestigious title as the Larry “Flame” Moore Foundation grant recipient for 2011. He plans on further developing his talents and possibly enrolling himself in a photo business course with the prize money.

Follow The Light 2011

This year’s event is open to the public tonight at 7pm at the Huntington Beach Shorebreak Hotel’s Main Ballroom. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to preview the future of surf photography during the biggest action sports festival in the world, The US Open of Surfing. Every year the world best surfers show up to see which photog they want to travel with in order to get their next cover shot.

Let us know who you think has the passion to take this years 5k grant donated by Swell.com. Click their names to see profolo submissions. Here’s what inspires these young lensmen:

Carlos Santana
“The feelings that I get through my photography are what fuel my passion. The most joy that I experience happens when I’m swimming in the ocean with my camera because I simply feel free and in love with what I’m doing and when I’m doing it.”

Matt Kurvin
“I spent a lot of time on the beach and in the water watching 6 inch waves peel, wishing I was small enough to ride them. I was never able to describe to people the way I saw things, especially in the ocean. It wasn’t until photography entered my world that I was finally able to do so.”

Quincy Dein
“As a photographer, I feel successful when the person viewing one of my images takes a moment to rethink what is possible. I want to inspire people to go outside, to enjoy life, and to explore.”

Ricky Lesser
He has traveled the world, photographing some its most unique locations and people. Lessers’ unique ability to craft story through imagery is second only to his unbridled optimism and enthusiasm for life. He currently resides in Manhattan Beach, surrounded by his greatest muses – his wife Bekah, son Noah and the enduring, domineering Pacific.

Duncan Macfarlane
“During high school I doodled with some smaller point and shoot cameras and then a Nikonos V, which I flooded because I knew nothing of seals and water photography. That prompted me to get a DSLR and from there I have been shooting for the last few years learning as I go.”

tribal
Our style inspiration this season: live and dye by the fringe.
Fall’s standout style is no doubt a reincarnation of the summer’s tribal print trend- taken to new heights with polished trims, fringed boots, and beaded accents. Free-slowing silhouettes dominate the look. Chiffons and golds sweeten up the earthy overtones. Go ahead and rock out with your moc out in this trend!

Are you on the tribal band-wagon this season?

Sneak Peek: Fall 2011 SWELL Catalog!

July 30th, 2011 | By | 5,228 Comments

A peek into what you’ll find in your mailbox in a few days…
picture-1

Our Fall catalog should be hitting your homes any day now. I know it’s still hot and muggy,
but seeing all these light weight sweaters and fringe boots makes me want to layer up. Our stylist and models went gaga over the product at the shoot, but I’ve narrowed it down to my top favorite trends for the season:

1. Cropped sweaters – So cute over your favorite summer maxi dress or paired with high waist jeans.

2. Flared jeans – nostalgic 70′s inspired (or in my case,  reminds me of the movie Dazed and Confused)

3. Colors of the season: Orange and Russets. Although I live in Southern California, where it’s pretty much 75 degrees year round, these deep rich hues remind of maple leaves turning color in autumn.
So to all of you girls who are in denial that summer is going to have to end, you can at least look forward to sporting some of the great fashion for the Fall season.

Now go check your mailbox for the Fall catalog!
