San Clemente HS Surf Team Claims National Title

June 27th, 2011 | By | 2,485 Comments

The Swell proudly sponsored another year of San Clemente High School Surf Team dominance. We watched our champs complete an undefeated season at Salt Creek Point, after many considered this a “rebuilding year.” They solidified San Clemente as the breeding ground for progressive surfing, and we’re excited to watch this young team mature over the next couple years.

Press Release:
Top ranked San Clemente High School marched to their eleventh National title in a decisive 111-103 victory over Edison High School. Both San Clemente and Edison came out of the gates with tremendous momentum in the first two rounds jumping to a huge points advantage over the rest of their opponents.

San Clemente led throughout the contest but Edison was still in the game until the semifinals when they lost their remaining Mens team competitors. San Clemente’s Breyden Taylor battled hard with runner-up Blake Davis in the hotly contested High School Men’s final. Taylor sealed it when he detonated on a heat high 7.5 wave score which was enough to edge Davis for the win and take home his first career National title. Taylor has become one of the standout surfers this season clinching his first NSSA conference in the Southwest Explorer Juniors division. He will be one of the leading contenders for a National title when that tier of the 2011 National Championships continues in Huntington Beach June 26-July 3.

Laguna Beach’s Taylor Pitz claimed her first National Championship in the High School Womens. Pitz, who was also a Southwest Conference Champion this season, will eye another title in the prestigious Open Womens category when the Nationals hits southside of the HB Pier next week. Huntington Beach’s Tony Bartovich took the Longboard title.

In the National Junior Varsity competition, Huntington Beach took a close 53-51 decision over Edison. This was HB’s first trip to the winners podium at the National Interscholastic Championships since their Varsity team’s victory in 1998. Edison’s Dylan Aragon took the Junior Varsity Mens title while Huntington Beach’s Paige Ortiz and Taylor McDole claimed victories in Junior Varsity Womens and Longboard respectively.

Behind the Scenes Pics from the SWELL Fall Catalog Shoot

June 24th, 2011 | By | 1,806 Comments

We just wrapped up shooting our Fall catalog at Casper’s Park in San Juan Capistrano. The images are beautifully shot with an ethereal feel that captures the essence of Fall. This has to be the best I’ve ever
seen the Fall product look. Some of the trends we are highlighting for Fall: light weight poncho sweaters, gauzy flowing dresses, and flared distressed denim.
Even though we haven’t quite reached Summer in Southern California yet (thanks to the June gloom), I am ready to
trade in my cropped tanks and denim shorts for a kimono style cardigan and a pair of Frye boots.

I’ve snuck some candid picture I took at the shoot of our team styling the models (and some Fall product sneak peeks!). You’re the first to see it!

International Surfing Day 2011 -Swell Highlight Reel

June 23rd, 2011 | By | 3,565 Comments

Follow Swell down the Pacific Coast Highway on our “South Bay to South of the Border” ISD mission.

We loaded up the van at 4:30 am in Dana Point, to arrive at the Manhattan Beach Pier for our first rendezvous with a Surfrider beach clean-up. From there we headed south to Huntington, and on to Surfrider headquarters at the Rusty/Surfing house in Newport where Nate Yeomans and Damien Fahrenfort kept us entertained with their banter and BS.

Our next stop at Second Reef surf shop in Laguna offered even more comic relief. Shop manager/legend Brad Burdick and friends threw on their bandito garb for a session at Thalia Reef.

Another Laguna loc, Porter Hogan hopped in the SWELL Van for the second leg of the journey, and launched airs across international borders. Our local San Clemente stop proved most productive. A host of groms and goonies awaited us eager to scavenge the sand and sea wall for trash, like squirrels preparing for winter. They fully cashed in on the “trade trash for tees and dvds” promo we offered.

A quick stop at Trestles proved that the wind stayed calm, so we jammed down for burgers and 5 hour energy drinks in Cardiff, where Reef sandals rallied another impressive clean-up and BBQ. A gang of Swell fan-ettes posed for photos with their trash like trophies, and we were off to Mexico.

We battled some heavy traffic with heavy metal, and landed in Tijuana in time for one last surf and clean-up. Some local bros grabbed their rakes and set the pace as we cleaned up some unfiltered runoff pipes. After a quick rap session with some federales at a taco stand, border traffic was our last obstacle. We hit home just before midnight burnt-out but satisfied in completing our mission to clean-up and surf across three counties and two countries.

A special thanks to The Surfrider Foundation for inspiring us, and all the beach clean-ups around the world. Enjoy the video recap on International Surfing Day 2011.

First Look: International Surfing Day Recap

June 22nd, 2011 | By | 1,947 Comments

Monday’s International Surf Day marked the second longest day of the year, but felt like the longest day of our lives. From South L.A. Bay to South of the Mexican boarder, we partnered up with various chapters of the Surfrider Foundation, local pros, and surf brands to celebrate the sport and kick off summer right! We’re still sifting through hours of video footage, but here’s a first look of our ISD Surf/Clean-a-thon.

Stay tuned for the video recap of Swell’s “South Bay to South of the Border” video later this week.
