Carissa Moore vs Taj Burrow in Men’s Vans Triple Crown of Surfing

November 11th, 2011 | By | 3,165 Comments

The Mens world tour surfers have dreaded this day for a long time, not because they dislike female surfing, but they fear them as competitors. The womens tour surfers have closed the talent gap in the last two years, and the men fear to be the first to fall to a female.

With Carrissa claiming the women’s world title and officially clocked as the fastest surfer on either tour, she looks primed to make history. Carrissa competed against men at trestles a couple years ago, and got smoked by Adriano and Shane Beschen. But now she’s on her home turf with the pride of Hawaii on her shoulders.

Taj drew Carissa in the first round of the Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa, and he’s already hearing the heckles from fellow WT bros, but he respects the reality of defeat “It’s an awful thought losing to a girl! But she hangs the tail out most turns. If I were to lose to a girl a few years ago I’d be super freaked, but Carissa definitely rips.”

Watch tomorrow live during the Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa. The way she’s been ripping, dont be suprised to see her steal the whole Vans Triple Crown.

The Crowning of Ke11y – Photos of Slaters 11th World Title Win in SF

A lot of us here were pretty bummed we couldn’t attend the Rip Curl Search San Francisco. With Dusty’s shark sighting, the raw Nor Cal surf, and the embarrassing double crowning of Kelly, this was definitely a memorable event. Fortunately a good friend of ours, Gabriel Valencia, sent us some shots he took while roaming the grounds of OB. His vivid pics seem to capture the vibe that was somehow lost through the live feeds and recaps. Enjoy the shots above compliments of Gabby and let us know what you think in the comments below!

Kelly Hasn’t Won 11th World Title Just Yet! Quik & ASP Jump the Gun!

November 4th, 2011 | By | 3,634 Comments

Well this is embarassing… Days after littering Ocean Beach with Ke11y Tees, hats and signs, rumors began to circulate about the champ celebrating preemptively. (Updated: 12:00pm PST)

According to Slater’s twitter page and now confirmed by the ASP, Kelly hasn’t yet officially taken the 11th World title. In a miscalculation Slater was mistakenly awarded 2011 World Champ Title prematurely. There are still several possible scenarios where Aussie surfer, Owen Wright could become the 2011 champ.

This morning he jokingly tweeted, “Hang on to that KS10 gear if you have some… just in case. HaHa.” and later twitted, “@aspworldtour isn’t gonna be happy with me or this but realized last night and confirmed just now with them. Only honest thing to do.” Then, “In all seriousness, there may be an honest mistake or computer glitch and we’re getting to the bottom of it now.”

Check out slater’s Twitter Page for yourself:!/kellyslater

Now all eyes are on Owen to see if we’ll truly have a “Dewey Defeats Truman” moment. Either way I think it’s safe to say that Slater’s got this in the bag, if not those Ke11y tees will be pretty hilarious collectibles. I’ve got my fingers crossed for the “Surf Off” Scenario below.

Go Ke1?y!

– If Kelly wins either Round 4 or 5 (one more heat win) in San Francisco, he will confirm his 2011 ASP World Title.
– If Kelly fails to win another heat in San Francisco, Owen must win this event to send the 2011 ASP World Title race to Hawaii.
– If the race goes to Hawaii, Kelly must advance out of one heat to confirm his 2011 ASP World Title. If Kelly fails to advance through a heat at Pipeline, Owen must also win this event to stay in the 2011 ASP World Title Race.
– If Kelly fails to advance out of another heat this season, and Owen wins in San Francisco and Pipeline, the two will tie at best of nine, eight, seven, etc. events, and the 2011 ASP World Title will be decided in a “Surf Off”.

Whale Nearly Hits Kayakers and Woman on Longboard

November 4th, 2011 | By | 2,770 Comments

Check out this close call where humpback whale nearly lands on top of some kayakers and a woman on a longboard. No it’s not Moby Dick lunging up from the watery abyss, it’s just one of many humpback whales that congregated off the Santa Cruz coastline this past Wednesday. The whales gathered just off the pier at Cowell’s to feed on the closer than average bait balls.

Instead of letting these beautiful behemoths feed in peace, hoards of novice sea enthusiast paddled out for a closer look. Whether it was out of ignorance or sheer stupidity these folks didn’t care to think about the consequences of sitting right in the middle of a feeding frenzy. Besides whales, large schools of anchovies often attract other predatory animals and, in the frosty waters of SC county, who knows what else could be lurking beneath. Then again these are probably the same geniuses that’d like to swim with the seals.

Particularly infuriating is when an man says, “never paddled out this far before” at 9 seconds into the clip. It’s obvious these people are not “surfers” (as Yahoo deems them) and furthermore these folks lack an understanding and respect of the ocean. Hopefully everyone can learn something from this incident and avoid another close call with marine wildlife.

The SC harbor patrol and Dept of Fish and Game began issuing warnings to keep people away from the feeding whales.
