1. Focus on what’s important with the Fisheye lens.
Before shooting with a fisheye lens, determine the most important elements in your composition (placement or arrangement of visual elements). The subject you focus on will be sharp and clear but peripheral elements that are away from the center of the picture will have a characteristic fisheye stretch. Background elements are generally secondary when using this lens, so your foreground subjects must be able to carry the composition and provide power to the image.
2. Keep the foreground free. (more…)

I spend a big chunk of the year on the road, traveling from state to state in search mountain peaks and fun waves. What I’ve learned (besides roadside burritos are never a good idea)? That a fun road trip can turn ugly if you aren’t prepared with the right gear.
Deciding to embark on a spontaneous road trip doesn’t have to end in frustration. Nine times out of ten, you’ll roll back into the garage without a single hiccup in your journey. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared for all the things that could go wrong.
It’s easy to road-trip proof your car and stock it with the right supplies. Do it now and you’ll be ready to roll at a moment’s notice (and never have to get ripped off by a tow truck company again!).

Ask any surfer what the name ‘Katin’ means to them and they’ll claim the K-man invented boardshorts in the 1950’s and started the renowned surf competition, the Katin Classic Pro/Am. These pioneers were born in Surfside, CA and in an era of out-sourcing, still keep their production at home in SoCal. Given their commitment to quality, American-made goods, we’re stoked to feature Katin in SWELL’s Locals Only collection.

Every logger you ask will tell you the same thing – the fin on your board is a crucial element to getting the most out of your wave riding experience. Whether you’ve got a classic square-tail noserider, a sleek rounded pin, or an experimental asymm, Captain Fin Co makes stylish skegs for all!
For my square-tail 9’5 log, I prefer the JJ Wessels 9 inch fin. The rake is perfectly versatile for setting my tail at points, reefs, and beach breaks!
