Oceanographer Charles Moore, who originally discovered the waste dump in 1997, believes there is more than a million tons of plastic resting here, or about 2.5% of all plastic items made since 1950. Almost unbelievable to imagine, the garbage piles are thought to cover more area than the United States. News Australia has more.
