THE QUIVER GIVER CONTEST GIVES!

SWELL AND THALIA STREET SURF SHOP AWARD THE SURFBOARD QUIVER TO NEWPORT FAMILY

familt

San Clemente, CA – The unconventional partnering of Swell, the premiere online surf retailer, and legendary surf shop, Thalia Street Surf, gave birth to  one of the biggest and most unique board giveaways ever! The stoked out winner(s) of the Surfboard Quiver Giveaway were announced on Friday, Jan 16th. A priceless collection of five hand-crafted boards from surfing’s most renowned shapers was the coveted prize.

Swell and Thalia Street Surf Shop conducted the random drawing and contacted the winner - Hillary Springborn, from Newport Beach. Come to find out, she rarely enters sweepstakes, but thought it was perfect for her family of water babies, soon to be groms and long time surfers. The entire excited crew showed up in the SUV to claim their boards and get “I saw it first” rights. Here’s a short interview with Scott Springborn, Hillary’s husband:

Q. Family names and ages:
A. Hillary [mom], Scott [dad], Siena [7 1/2 years old, she made sure I knew she wasn't 7 but 7 1/2], Kiernen [5] and Grayson [turned 3 on Monday- Happy Birthday indeed!]

Q. How Long Have You Been Surfing?
A. 15 years

Q. Favorite Spot?
A. Blackies, 56th Street, basically any spot in Newport. When I’m by myself I’m surfing 56th, but for surf days with the family it’s always Blackies.

Q. How did you hear about the contest? Have you shopped at Thalia in the past?
A. We heard about it when we saw that ad in Surfer Magazine. Hillary’s mom actually lives in Laguna Beach, so of course we shop at Thalia Street!

Q. Which board are you most excited to ride and why?
A. Ah! The Alaia! That’ll be the one we all fight over! It’s such a unique board and one that I’ve been so interested in trying, but it’s one of those boards that you don’t just go out and buy, so for us to have won it is perfect!

Q. So, last question, if there was one board that you had to giveaway which would it be….and can we have it?
A. Hahaha, sorry guys, but there’s five boards and five Springborns. We’re putting mileage on all of them!!

“With tens of thousands of entries from across the country, we were very excited to learn that the winner was a surfing family from Southern California,” said Stacy Clark, CEO Swell. “The partnership with Thalia Street couldn’t have been better. It’s a great shop with a great team.”

“We are really excited to have been able to stoke out such a cool family from our own county,” said Nick Cocores, owner Thalia Street Surf Shop. “We can’t believe out of all the entries that a local family won. We want to thank everyone for all their entries and loved the comments.”

About the Quiver Boards

DANO AND THE PIGNAR BREADBASKET

Dano is a local shaper based out of Costa Mesa, CA. He can frequently be seen surfing Blackies in Newport any day of the week and continues to shape boards just as often. His board shapes are influenced by his 1950’s style, which can especially be seen in his Pignar Breadbasket model. This design features a 9′9 Pig shape, with an early 1960’s outline and a glassed-on D Fin. It has wide hips set in the bottom-third of the board. This is a great alternative longboard for the classic logger, with a full opaque tint. This is also Thomas Campbell’s model, the filmmaker of Sprout and Seedling. Measurements: 9′9″x 16 ¼”x 22 ½” x 16″x 3 ¼”

JUNOD AND THE BATTAIL QUAD

Michel Junod, a California native, began surfing in the early sixties and started shaping in 1966. Moving between California’s west coast and Oahu’s North Shore, Junod finally settled down with his family in Santa Cruz where he continues to surf and shape constantly. In his past he has shaped for Dick Brewer Surfboards and alongside Terry Martin of Hobie Surfboards. His Battail Quad features similar bottom contours to a Stretch Quad. This is more of a high performance quad, with a smaller beak nose and a full resin tint. Measurements: 5′10″ 13 ¼”x 19 ½”x 15 ¼”x 2 3/8″

JON WEGENER AND THE ALAIA

Jon Wegener has been shaping for 21 years and dreams of doing nothing else except surfing and shaping. As a board maker Jon has always tried to find the right board for the right conditions. He loves to make and ride a huge variety of surfboards, from the raw wood of the Alaia, to the “traditional” fiberglass noserider, to the modern shortboard, and anything in between. He truly believes that there is a time and place for every type of board. The Alaia is a thin, flat rockered board that is made to move very quickly. The hard edge of the rail bites into the wave like a long fin and the gentle curves on the bottom hold the board into the face of the wave. Measurements:  7′0″x 14 ¼”x 16 ¼”x 14″x ¾”

THE CAMPBELL BROTHERS AND THE BONZER

The Campbell Brothers began shaping in 1970 where they melded surfboards with science and developed the first tri-fin surfboard design: The Bonzer. Growing up in Oxnard, CA, The brothers saw the limitations that the short single and twin fins had, and over the next 10 years they produced a highly refined version of their original tri-fin design. Malcom Campbell hand shaped this Diamond Tail Five-Fin Egg to be the perfect all-around egg for waves in the 2-foot to 8-foot range. This five-fin set up works well in hollow, over head surf and makes the board more comfortable in bigger waves. This is a great board for beach breaks, and of course, perfect point breaks. Measurements: 6′4″ x 20 1/2″ x 2 5/8

RICH “TOBY” PAVEL AND THE RAINBOW PAVEL QUAN

Rich Pavel shapes out of San Diego and is THE go-to man for fish designs. His SpeedDialer was the first quad-fin setup for a surfboard, in which the classic late sixties fish design was meshed with a new age fin system. He now shapes for three different labels: Rainbow Surfboards, The Swift Movement, and his own label, Green Room Surfboards. The Rainbow Pavel Quan is the modern evolution of the classic fish, shaped up to 8′0″. Features include a contemporary rocker, low entry, slope rail, slight concave deck, beak nose, and double into single barrel afterburner. Measurements: 5′10″ x 20 1/2″ x 2″
