Smile On Your Brother

ELEMENT EDEN ADVOCATE AMBER B. DESIGNS SKATEBOARDS FOR CHARITY

smile-21

Smile on Your Brother: It’s more than just a sweet-sounding name, although we do think it’s pretty sweet. Smile on Your Brother is a skate art (literally, skateboard art) exhibition that features creations from international artists, including Element Eden Advocate Amber B (shown above). Besides offering up the obvious eye candy, the shows help to support disadvantaged youth by contributing skateboards, providing them with an outlet for constructive freedom and helping to push them to achieve their goals.

Want to see the creations first hand? If you happen to be one of our Canadian readers, you’re in luck!

Aug 6, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Follow the Light Foundation Announces Extended date for submissions to
The 2009 Follow the Light Foundation Surf Photographers Grant and change of date for the 4th Follow the Light Recipient dinner

$5,000 to be granted to the winning photographer

We are happy to announce that we are extending the deadline for our 2009 applications from Aug. 17 to Aug. 31, 2009. The winner of the grant for this year will now be announced on October 22, 2009 during the 2009 Follow the Light Recipient Dinner to be held on at the Surfing Heritage Museum in San Clemente, CA.

SAN CLEMENTE, CA- For the fourth year in a row, the Follow the Light Foundation (FTLF) will award $5000 to a deserving photographer in honor of the late Larry “Flame” Moore. The FTLF was founded after Moore’s passing in the attempt to continue his legacy of assisting up and coming photographers. Photographers of all ability levels are encouraged to participate. The application and details can be found on the FTLF website http://followthelightfoundation.org.

The FTLF is proud to be working with Surfing Magazine, SWELL, Hurley, Surfline and Oakley to provide this year’s grant.

About Follow the Light: On October 10th, 2005, the surfing community lost one of its most influential figures. After a nearly three-year battle with brain cancer Larry “Flame” Moore, the Photo Editor of SURFING Magazine for 30 years, passed. He left behind a legacy of brilliant photography and an army of photographers trained by him. Through his work at SURFING Magazine, Larry literally gave three decades of surfing their “look.” Today, honoring Larry’s request, we have established Follow the Light Foundation (FTLF), an organization that will help finance the dreams of surf photographers, pushing the sport and its lensmen forward.

See Erin Wasson’s Apartment on The Selby

Browsing through the Selby today, I came across RVCA’s face and designer Erin Wasson’s Manhattan apartment. The Selby is a website featuring photographs, paintings and videos of interesting people and their creative spaces. Erin Wasson’s creative place highlights her signature leather-studded and lace street style in a downtown open loft. Her favorite part? The amber lights. Mine? Hands down the vintage-looking city bike propped up against the wall of sketches. Interested scoping out the RVCA designer’s eclectic pad? Get a glimpse here.

Surf Gallery Tees: Artist Julie Goldstein

julie-2julie-1

It’s already been a helluva year for artist Julie Goldstein. As one of the most recognized modern surf artists, Julie and her husband Mark Tesi had recently accomplished one of their lifelong dreams with the opening of Pine Surf Shop and Gallery in Long Beach, NY. Extremely popular with the diverse art communities throughout the eastern seaboard, Pine served as a beacon to surfers, artists, families and admirers as place to chill and be inspired. All that changed on December 20, 2008 when a fire destroyed nearly all of Pine’s irreplaceable inventory, including priceless vintage surfboards, original art, photos and wood sculptures, as well as the merchandise and supplies for the couple’s new clothing line, Perfect.

While Julie and Mark make tentative plans to relaunch Pine and Perfect, Swell hopes to spread the message and encourage new fans of Julie’s art with the sales of the two tees featured above. Julie’s unique method begins by drawing on blocks of wood, which she then hand carves and finally prints the woodcuts onto paper, canvas, or fabric. Her work is inspired by her experience in the surf community as well as from her time spent living in Brooklyn, during which she obtained her MA from Columbia University.

Later this month, Julie will be exhibiting at the Australian leg of the surf, art, film and music festival, “The Happening”.
