Twice a year, the entire action sports industry converges to San Diego for three hectic days at the Action Sports Retailer (ASR) trade shows. Here, retailers from around the globe will view lines and purchase orders for the upcoming seasons, attend informative market strategy seminars, and have the chance to further develop their network of business associates—all in a constructive and encouraging environment.
And immediately following those busy first few hours, they perv.
Who are we kidding? ASR is the best party you’ll probably never get to attend. It’s models and clowns and music and hangovers. And we’ve captured the best of it in the following photos.

The model / sales rep made a point to tell us the Obama bikini bottoms were “just for fun.” I guess she mistook my “that’s tacky” expression for: “I wonder if I can wear these to work?”
Always a crowd pleaser, Body Glove never ceases to amaze.
Compared to her competition, this model seemed to sit higher than most.
We’re a little late in getting the word out, but the latest digital edition of Foam is up and looking good. Honestly, we’d have to say this is the most inspiring issue yet. Features include a gorgeous profile on Lake Bell, along with pages upon pages of incredible fashion editorials. Come on Obama, can you get going on your plan to fix the economy? I hate everything in my closet right now.
You probably won’t recognize his name, but you certainly know his handy work. Not to mention, Mother Ocean likes to think of him as her prodigal son. Meet Olaf Lohr, the main man behind Surfrider’s stellar membership drive.
Whenever you see a Surfrider sticker, email or newsletter, Olaf is the one who’s directing the creative distribution. As Membership Manager, O is on the hook for securing new members and keeping current one’s happy. So as you would imagine, much of his job is handshakes and smiles—and action sports loves him for it! Originally from Chemnitz, Germany, O hit Orange County in the late 90’s when he worked for a dot comer that provided technical support to Surfrider. After meeting the crew and volunteering at a few of their fundraisers, a position emerged that had O’s name written all over it. Already aware of his hard work ethic, Surfrider eagerly welcomed him aboard. (Which further proves what we’ve been saying all along: internships/volunteering = open doors.) (more…)
Alexandra Cassaniti has been known to follow the sun. “When things go wrong,” the 26-year-old designer says, “I think, where in the world is it summer right now? I’m going there!” But since the launch of her eponymous line of accessories in March, Cassaniti has made summertime a year-round privilege, hemispheres be dammed. FOAM’s relaunch party went down this past Tuesday at the Surf Gallery in Laguna Beach. As you’d expect, the crowd was hot and so was action. (Seriously, there was no air conditioning). Rochelle Ballard, Kassia Meador, the Gudauskas trios, and Donovan Frankenrieter were among some of the elite to soak up the free drinks, sushi and atmosphere. For songwriter Priscilla Ahn, moving out west meant making it big.
Priscilla Ahn speaks just like she sings, in a voice that’s sweet, hopeful, and full of life. The singer-songwriter is home in the LA apartment she shares with her boyfriend, taking a break between road gigs to promote her breezy debut album, A Good Day. The set of mellow, acoustic guitar-laden, love-and-life songs just came out on Blue Note, the legendary jazz imprint that nurtured Norah Jones to blockbuster status. Though it’s the one label Ahn always though would be perfect for her, the contract, the tours, and the press are all a big surprise. “I didn’t expect anything at all,” she says modestly. The 24-year-old beauty is just happy to be making a career of music. “I feel really lucky that I’m able to make enough dough to just do this,” she says. (more…)

Mark Whalberg is slated to play Koby Abberton in the Hollywood biopic Bra Boys, due out next summer (produced by Brian Grazer and directed by Russell Crowe). Whalberg wishes he were as cool as Koby. The upcoming film, and documentary of the same name, (released last year to film festivals, and coming out on DVD in early May), is the story of the Australian Maroubra beach gang known as the Bra Boys, led by Sunny Abberton and his brothers Koby and Jai. Since the doc’s release, their notorious tale-tragic, heroic, complicated- has been sensationalized by the media and fans alike, and repudiated by local police. (more…)
