By now, we all know that the situation regarding plastic in our oceans is getting worse and worse. According to environmental awareness website EcoWatch, “one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans,” and “44 percent of all seabird species, 22 percent of cetaceans, all sea turtle species and a growing list of fish species have been documented with plastic in or around their bodies.”

Saturday Salute | Glühwein (Mulled Wine)

When in search of a spirit to get into the Holiday spirit, nothing beats at mug of Glühwein. Spicy, slightly sweet, and served warm, this travel mug-ready beverage is a go-to pick for Christmas tree lightings and holiday parades (it does make sitting in the cold, watching swarms twinkle light-wrapped scooters getting herded through a street a bit easier to sit through). Throwing an ugly sweater party? Best to have a crock pot of this stuff ready. If the mix of wine and brandy doesn’t lift your spirits, the smell of winter spice throughout the house will do the trick.

My first rock climb was up a towering rock formation looming over California’s Idyllwild wilderness—three pitches and many hours with two much more experienced friends who would make sure I was safe. It was way out of my league and I scrambled over the top with bloody fingers, scraped knees, shaking arms and barely a scrap of energy left.
