Ok, this is a total personal preference post, per say. (Say that five times fast). But some of the best, most invigorating and motivating runs I’ve had in my life, were completely out of the blue, off the beaten path, or not pre meditated whatsoever.
We’re talking laying on the beach on a Saturday, standing up, and deciding to go for a quick run. Or driving home from work, and pulling over to do a trail run. Or one of my favorites, being in a new city and just going out and exploring the area with my own (very quickly moving) two feet for a little bit. In fact, I recommend keeping a pair of running shoes in your car at all times for this very reason.
I think what I like about this type of workout is this: Instead of driving to the gym to do a 30 minute run on the treadmill three scheduled days a week, it’s making fitness be a part of your daily life. A random run is as enjoyable to me as, let’s say, an out of the blue stop for some coffee, or a quick stop at your favorite boutique, or watching that fifth episode in a row of your favorite TV show you stream on Netflix (Friday Night lights. I miss you).
Random runs (to me) are a way of saying, hey I’ve made it to the point where I really DO enjoy being active, and it’s not a chore, but a way of life.
Hope that makes sense. Because I love them.

Southern California is known to be one of the most consistent places for waves in the world. That particular region of the state is a wave magnet that attracts swells from a broad spectrum of directions. But right now, we are in the midst of a shockingly long flat spell. There have been no significant swells over two feet in the last week and nothing is on the radar for the next two weeks. Surfers here have been in complete shock and even the most die hard short boarders have resorted to SUPs, wave kayaks, soft top long boards, and probably even wave jets. I see this as a great opportunity to get some on-land cross-training in, so I’ll be ready for when the waves decide to rerun one of these days.
