Double oop. 720. 540. Whatever you want to call it, Albee Layer has done it, becoming the first surfer ever to complete it and beating Julian Wilson in a footrace to the finish line. Outdoing Julian is no easy feat, especially when Red Bull throws a campaign geared towards J Dubs’ attempt at landing the elusive whirly bird alley oop rotation.
But as the money was thrown one way, the kids on Maui were hucking themselves into the wind in a more reckless fashion. Enjoi.
If you haven’t seen Albee Layer and Matt Meola’s entire web series “The Isle” yet then you have been missing out. The two aerial surfers and Innersection winners produce a new video every few months that is filled with innovative airs and classic outtakes. As you may know the trade winds blow in Maui nearly every day of the year, which makes for loftier airs and ultimately more time in the air. Even Greg Long has called Albee “The most exciting surfer in the world” for his skills on slabs and in the air.
While the pair have invented their own aerials in the past, this “Albee Oop” is deservedly at the top of the list. He spins a full rotation alley oop and proceeds to keep spinning another 180 degrees, landing with his tail towards the beach and rotating out with the motion. Incredibly difficult and unprecedented until now. SWELL would like to give a big congratulations to Albee and we can’t wait to see what he and Meola do next.

John John Florence might be the most exciting surfer in the world today. Amidst his hallmark 2012 competitive season, the 20 year old jetted to Tahiti and Mexico and Indo and other mysto spots, he was on a mission for perfect waves.
The film is out on iTunes fairly soon, but if you happen to be on the North Shore of Oahu this Wednesday come by the Banzai skatepark at 6:30 PM for the premier and hang out with John John himself.
Early in the year he purchased his own Scarlet RED camera and decided to take his friend Blake Kueny along for the ride to document his surfing and travels. As the trips progressed so did John John’s surfing and the clips he was nailing. So he decided to make a short film titled Done.
The 23-minute profile film includes a cast of John’s best friends including: Nathan and Ivan Florence, Kiron Jabour, Matt Meola and Albee Layer. Some of the most progressive surfers in the world just happen to be John John’s friends and family, and these trend-setting, limit-pushing, death-defying surfers ride for the top brands on SWELL like Vans, Sanuk, O’Neill and Dakine. Start shredding all their signature products available at SWELL.
Just as John’s year started out with a bang (winning the Volcom Pipe Pro) it looks like it will end with an exclamation point with his first self-produced film, and his campaign to defend his Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Title. Watch the Sunset slab-fest set to run the finals tuesday 12/4 here.
