As the youngest winner ever, 19yr old Morgan Maassen stunned the audience and judges with his radical vision of the surf world. He also took home the “People’s Choice” award from the audience pool full of photog favorites like Rob Machado, Taj Burrow, Kolohe Andino, and Jamie O’Brien.
Picture pioneer Aaron Chang took the stage to introduce the talented finalist whose artistic approaches ranged from progressive surfing specialist Billy Watts of San Diego, to Brooks Institute student Corey Wilson, and Outter Banks warrior Matt Lusk. SWELL happily sponsored the 5K grant to encourage this young talent to raise the bar of surf photography that “Flame” so passionately pursued.
Morgan’s credited his family for making world-travel a priority in his childhood.
Congratulation again to all the finalists.

So you think that one wave during your last session where you went over the falls was pretty bad right? what was it, maybe 6 feet out there? maybe..? Most normal people can hardly fathom the feelings the big wave guys have when they get tossed at Jaws or Mav’s right?
Now, just put your self behind Professional Kayaker Tyler Brandts’ paddle for a minute and imagine falling an amazing 186 feet into a rock filled hole filled with churning water pouring onto you hundreds of gallons per minute… oh and he broke a record in the process!
WHAT WAS THIS GUY THINKING!?! a situation surfers try to avoid at all costs is something that makes this thrill seekers day!

Thanks to all who showed up at the Idiosyncrasies premiere in Laguna last night. Some lucky hoodlums ended up with a random assortment of SWELL schwag ranging from $100 gift cards and backpacks to shirts, hats and whatever else the SWELL crew could throw at the crowd. Besides all the gear given away on the spot, those who signed up at the SWELL booth were also entered to win the $50K Billabong Team boat sweepstakes. So if you missed this showing, make sure to show up at the next venue to sign up and claim your prizes!

Judging from the hoots and whistles coming from the crowd, the movie was a hit as well and the sound of cheers and coldies cracking was a many throughout the film. The after party was equally enjoyable; wine was flowing and Christian Beamish’s film-featured hand-crafted sailing vessel was parked out front on PCH. It was a great night out on the town and we here at SWELL are definitely looking forward to the next showing. Next Stop on the film tour will be Encinitas at La Paloma theater, a venue that always delivers a fun and memorable experience. Stay tuned for more detailed information & updates about future showings where we will hook you all up with some more gear and giveaways!
