As promised…some saucy (okay, and shaky) footage from last night’s Billabong Design for Humanity fashion show.
Surfing Magazine’s “Partial Bikini Coverage” report tells us that Mandy and the rest of the Billabong design team foraged the thrift stores and Grandma’s closet to complete the crochet-fringed and deconstructed leather looks. Highlights (says us), included some snakeskin skimpies, a fringed sleeve one-piece, and sequined shrug ensemble. What’s your favorite look from the clip?
Cheers to the team at Billabong for another superb showing!

A Video and Photo Re-Cap of Billabong’s Design for Humanity 2011…
Paramount Studios, Hollywood CA- Once again, the event known for both giving, and exposing, back, didn’t miss a bikini-clad beat. For the 5th year, Billabong’s Design for Humanity 2011 delivered an eclectic mix of head-turning bikinis, original artwork, and folk-tastico tunes from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros that, somehow, tied the proverbial dreamcatcher feathers together. Contrasting the an abundance of beer foam-dipped staches and gratuitous man tanks was the ever-popular swim runway show- a sneak peak into Billabong designers’ imaginations, as well as a taste of what’s to come next year in swim. This years show was a full on walk-off of fringe and sequins, topped-off with crochet and sueded trims.
Once the runaway show ended, jaws were picked up off the floor, and dancing shoes distributed, the tunes started flowing. The line-up included blues/soul/garage rock from Hanni El Khatib, avant-pop from The Hundred In The Hands, gritty, psychedelic rock & roll from B.L.O.R.R., and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros brought it all home.
To top the tomfoolery, every ticket, bikini and beer (don’t worry- we drank/donated one for you) went to the VH1 Save the Music Foundation– non-profit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music education in America’s public schools. We’ll cheers to that!

Derek Hynd is an Australian surfer/shaper/writer. On top of being a former contest pro and intelligent writer, he’s one of surfing’s great innovators and explorers. His ability of high level surfing as well as having such an understanding of board shaping and hydrodynamics puts him in a category which only the likes of George Greenough and Tom Wegener can hold a candle to.
Over the past few years Derek has been shaping and riding his own finless surfboard design. Instead of joining the throngs on the trail of the Polynesian Alaia he’s been updating this concept by using the advances of bottom contours in PU blanks. This newly invented, skegless board design has allowed him to harness the reduction of friction along with having the hold, trim and turning properties of concave. These results may just be a window into the future. Derek Hynd we salute you!
