Party Pics: Stab in the Dark Julian Wilson's Cinco De Mayo Party Announcing DHD as the Winning Surfboard

STAB

Last night in Venice SWELL hosted a party with 400 of our closest friends to unveil the best surfboard inthe world. Really, how else would you get an unbiased winner than giving a top WSL surfer 10 unlabeled boards and cutting him loose in Western Australian ramps? Well, the winner was DHD Surfboards and  Daren Handley was over  the moon as he as handed a framed cover of his Stab in the Dark Covershot.

In typical Stab Mag style the party was littered with eager coeds and a cinco de mayo open bar that set the place on fire.  Photos by Matty Wong

You won’t wanna miss it. We’ll also be dropping a short profile series on the shapers in the coming weeks. Stay tuned. (more…)

How to Take Better Outdoor Instagrams A series on finding adventure, stoke, and a killer workout in the Great Outdoors by Johnie Gall.

betterinstagrams Tired of the vicious cycle of spinach wraps and Sepia filters on Instagram? Break the mold and curate a gallery of double-tap worthy adventure shots—it’s not as hard as it sounds. Most of the time, creating a gorgeous Instagram gallery isn’t about where you are, it’s about how you shoot it (because any outdoor excursion, big or small, is pretty dang beautiful). And keep in mind, Instagram isn’t just about racking up followers—it can be a great way to revisit your favorite moments and connect with old friends easily. Here, eight tips for taking better outdoor Instagram shots you’ll definitely “like” for a long time to come—even if you aren’t a professional photographer.

Figure out what your goal is with your gallery—is it to tell a story? Chronicle your life? Score a sponsorship? Let that dictate what your photos look like.

Tip #1: Rethink Your Instagram

My friend Kat Carney, who happens to have one of the most beautiful Instagram galleries I’ve seen yet, once told me to think about my Instagram as if I were curating a small, square art gallery—advice that’s totally changed the look of my own account! Instead of snapping everything and anything and posting it, try being pickier with what you share with the world. Just like you’d edit a real-life photography gallery to fit a theme, your Instagram should reflect a specific mood or story. Choose yours and post accordingly! (more…)
