Some so-called novelty waves turned epic on the day of the decade, and while everyone was shooting Newport, Matt O’Brien shot the spots that very rarely see a 9 ft swell at 17 seconds. You’ve heard the sayings, when life gives you lemons…make lemonade, a lemonade vodka, gin & tonic, lemon bars, (usually it’s something food or beverage related). Well one of the single best mood lifters for me, is surfing. Maybe not at Malibu with 600 people on a weekend when there is a swell, but most of the time, it makes me feel better, puts things into perspective, is a stress relief, calms me down, makes me smile, and is my go to happy pill. In fact when I am feeling down, (or like lemons are belong chucked at me from all angles) 98% of the time it’s because I haven’t been in the water enough.
So I say, the next time life gives you lemons, squeeze one of them in your hair, and go for a surf.
Maybe you’ll even score some free highlights. More likely from the sun and saltwater though, since the lemon juice will probably rinse off when you hop in the water.

Send off summer with a cocktail that combines two of our favorite things: watermelon and sea salt (oh yeah, and tequila). Don’t be fooled by the unicorn tear-pink hue, this cocktail isn’t for lightweights or sugar saturated drink-lovers. It packs a well disguised, perfectly balanced punch…that can, coincidentally, be served punch-style in the melon from whence it came. And because it contains zero added sugar, it’s a recipe that cocktail aficionados, beach bod conscious imbibers and casual Sunday sippers can enjoy equally.
Cheers to another perfect summer, watermelon in hand. Read on for the recipe…
