In 1999, physician and surfer Dr Dave Jenkins went on a surf charter to the Mentawai Islands with one goal in mind: to find perfect waves. The surf at Lance’s Right proved to be everything he hoped for but he was also struck by the needless suffering and preventable death in the Mentawai Islands.
Today SurfAid includes a strong network of surfers, celebrities and global ambassadors actively empowering the Indo islanders to protect themselves from famine, floods, and become economic sustainable. And now you can support SurfAid with their iconic tee styles at SWELL
To give back to the place where sooo many surfers have scored the waves of their careers, companies like Billabong and Quiksilver have each committed over $100,000 to SurfAid for preparation to emergencies facing the Mentawai villagers. When the devastating tsunami hit in 2010, the villagers did not wait around for hand-outs, instead they addressed the horrific problems themselves, and have completed the major recovery projects with the help of SurfAid.
Surfaid International is now an iconic legacy in the surfing community, and their clothing line is a reflection of the vision it took to do the greater good while charging the world’s best reefs. Join Kelly Slater, Bruce Irons, Jack Johnson, Occy, Parko, Taj and more in supporting the cause by merely sporting a SurfAid tee
For those of you still stuck in your Coachella bubble: The following may not be suitable for those who fear the unconstitutionality of music not necessarily played on KIIS FM. The countdown officially begins to Outside Lands 2012 and we’re only hours away! (We meaning you, or those that are going. Not meaning me, who is sadly not going, and will be working inside the confines of her cubicle.)
The art and music festival begins this Friday and lasts three glorious days in the Golden State Park of San Francisco. Not ONLY is it just oh-so-fabulously-amazingly going on its 5th year, but the minds behind the madness haven’t lost their original eco-friendly initiatives. Eco Lands is the name and sustainability is its game. Serving as an educational forum, Eco Lands’ efforts include an alternative and solar powered stage, urban gardening workshops for all, a farmer’s market and a recycling store.
If you just so happened to bike your way up the California coast, no fear! Your two wheels have a happy home at the Levi’s bike valet. What makes this all dear and special to our heart here at SWELL, is our (not-so-coincidentally-timed) Saturday Ocean Beach clean-up with San Fransisco Surfrider! This is a serious win-win situation, wouldn’t you say?! Just one more good excuse to find yourself in SF over the weekend.
For all of those in my boat, which I’m hoping is a very, very large boat, like Moses and the Ark style, I’ve compiled a little playlist for you to enjoy above. Just close your eyes and imagine you’re there! … haha I’m just kidding! That never works! But at least you have something nice to listen to while you go on that run tonight. Riiiiiight? – Chanel
One Shirt = Clean water for 1 person, for 1 year.
Darn good shirts, for an equally good cause. This Shirt Helps is giving customers the chance to support social causes, with the purchase of an everyday item- a quality, solid tee – so you know exactly where your money is going, and how much it will help. Partnering with Waves for Water, these shirts go to providing clean water solutions to impoverished countries around the world.
Waves for Water was started by Pro surfer Jon Rose after the 2009 7.6 quake that destroyed the city of Padang – with more than 1,000 lives lost and 100,000 homeless. He began his mission to give back, helping disaster areas and communities in need of clean water, including Haiti, where they have brought 11,000 small, portable filters to date (clean water for more than 100,000 people.)
Show your support by donating to Waves for Water, by purchasing a This Shirt Helps tee.
