Parko’s Ten-Laced, Sweet, Sweet Victory at the Quik Pro Gold Coast

The judges at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast this go-around are serving out dimes like they’re going out of style. To the demise of a few fantasy surfer rankings, Parko’s undeniable victory yesterday was topped off with his second perfect ten of the day. Some solid waves and nearly flawless surfing led Joel Parkinson to the Gold Coast win and to the top of the ASP tour rankings. Bravo Parko.

Waiting on the edge of our swivel chairs over here to see what he brings to the next stop, Bells Beach.

Steph Gilmore Comes Up Golden at Roxy Pro Gold Coast

“It’s a new start for me. To win on your home turf, in front of all these people, it’s unbelievable.” — Stephanie Gilmore, 2009 Roxy Gold Coast Pro Champion

The Roxy Pro Gold Coast came to an end this weekend, and without any surprise the crown goes to Stephanie Gilmore. Stephanie had dominated most of the final, but in the last minutes fellow finalist Melanie Bartels stepped it up and fought hard to give Gilmore a scare. “I was definitely nervous surfing against her,” Steph said. “She’s a great surfer and I know she has the ability to throw good scores right back at me.” (more…)

A Perfect 10: Dane Reynolds at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast

A perfect ten. Some hypothesize it was the double grab, some accredit it to his outstanding flair, others propose it is the anti-chafing Diamond Dobby boardshorts he was rocking, but whatever the factors may be, Dane Reynolds scored a perfect 10 this weekend at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast.

Despite the popular speculation that the judges were a little overzealous when dishing out the ones and zeros this go-around, Dane seems to be pretty stoked on smashing his first ever dime.

Ten or what have you, I have to say that the background emo /pop punk tune in the video takes more than a few points off the clip’s core score. That said, thoughts on the perfect ten score? Let ‘em loose. I’m listening, really (unless you set your comment to said emo tune).

Day Two of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast

It looks as if my (I mean, the media’s) hype about the youngsters on tour is right on target.

I feel like the tour has taken a breath of fresh air this year: The rookies and veterans are definitely pushing each other to progress their surfing. Day two brought heats to remember, with the heat of the day going to Silvana Lima and Coco Ho—the queen of aerials and proud owner of this week’s only perfect 10, versus the on-fire Hawaiian rookie. And, drum roll please, after a six-minute judge’s delay, Coco Ho took the win to prove she’s a force to be reckoned with. After defeating Rebecca Woods in the following round, Ho made it through to the semis where she’ll face fellow islander Melanie Bartels. It looks as if Coco is mastering this whole competition thing… (more…)
