San Clemente Surf Team Update…SCHS vs. Laguna Beach Contest

schs

Swell’s local San Clemente Surf Team is back in action; once again laying down mad style points. Below is a quick update from Coach:

Tuesday morning saw the SCHS surf team waking up to rainy dreary conditions.   As soon as the call was made to run the event the rain disappeared and 2-3 foot peaky T-street appeared before the competitors.  Everyone bundled up on the beach watching the action saw San Clemente claim its first win of the season over Laguna Beach High School 102-66.  It was a great bounce back victory for the Tritons.  Stellar performances were turned in by Jonah Carter, Levi Gregory, Josh Mostow, and Eli Gillis who all placed first in there heats.  Up next for the Tritons will be Newport Harbor next Tuesday morning at 56th Street.

Dancing on the Surfer Poll

ry_craike

Next pro / Dancing with the Stars contestant? Ry Craike.

Ah, the Surfer Poll…as always, so predictable, yet so predictably awesome. I won’t bore you with the details, so here are some abbreviated highlights from last night’s Surfer Poll Awards in Anaheim, Ca: Multiple mentions of Alana Blanchard’s ass-ets. Dane Reynold’s acceptance speech consisted of thanking his girlfriend for giving him vitamin C and Quiksilver for the stickers. Kelly Slater won. Cory Lopez got tube ride of the year for his never-ending African mystery left in 5’5″ x 19 1/4″ Redux. And apparently, if you’re from West Oz, you’re flipping awesome. No surprises, but tons of radness. To quote Ry Craike mid-DC Shoes bus dance-off, “this is the best night of my life!”

Life Lessons with Ian Walsh and a Weatherman

ian_walsh

Did you know the O’Neill and Lost team rider Ian Walsh grew up in Maui “watching the massive surf breaks.” Whoa geez golly. You would know this, along with some swell safety tips for when you find yourself swimming in a hurricane and riveting revelations on why hurricanes are named after men, if you woke up with Al Roker the other day. Watch Ian Walsh really get down to the nitty gritty on swimming straight into shore when you’re in a rip current, how to handle a 6′ + board under hot stage lights, and his thoughts on how to name hurricanes. My only question left unanswered is, “when do we get to see Ian Walsh ‘Hang Ten’”? I must have missed that part when I left to go buy some Honey Bunches of Oat. Shoots.
It could be the reggae-lounge music in the background, but something about this clip just makes me smile. Then get that “I smell burnt toast” face. Then smile.
