Congrats Morgan Maassen, 2010 Winner of Larry “Flame”Moore Memorial Grant, Sponsored by SWELL

As the youngest winner ever, 19yr old Morgan Maassen stunned the audience and judges with his radical vision of the surf world. He also took home the “People’s Choice” award from the audience pool full of photog favorites like Rob Machado, Taj Burrow, Kolohe Andino, and Jamie O’Brien.

Picture pioneer Aaron Chang took the stage to introduce the talented finalist whose artistic approaches ranged from progressive surfing specialist Billy Watts of San Diego, to Brooks Institute student Corey Wilson, and Outter Banks warrior Matt Lusk. SWELL happily sponsored the 5K grant to encourage this young talent to raise the bar of surf photography that “Flame” so passionately pursued.

Morgan’s credited his family for making world-travel a priority in his childhood.

Congratulation again to all the finalists.

New X-Games Water-Sport

Born on the Laguna Beach shore-break, this sport puts sand-sprints and skim-boarding to shame.

SWELL agrees this routine should join the highest echelon of action sports. Take a look and judge for your self.

Coming to a beach near you. Watch out kids…seriously

Surfing Mag Crew Stops by the Lost Warehouse

lost Surfboards

We have this impulse to put our hands all over new surfboards, and hold them at odd angles, and say Hmmm, and Ahhhh, and to look contemplative as though we see meaning in the curves. It’s an absurd little dance and we do not resist it.

Last week that impulse drove us to visit Lost Surfboards at their San Clemente warehouse, but to no avail — locked door, empty office. Drat. Yesterday we tried again, and this time the boys were there and were quite good-natured about letting us walk around their workspace, touching their stuff and spouting ignorant dreck about surfboards. Steve, Trevor, Johnny and Andy hung out and answered questions about the newest Lost models and told us funny, unprintable stories about a Hawaiian surf legend.
