Waimea River Surfing & Cave Diving on Oahu’s North Shore

The SWELL team met up with old lifeguard bros on the Oahu’s North Shore, and they gave a local tip about digging out the Waimea river to create a surfable standing wave. Everyone was itching to get their feet in the wax in preparation for the big winter swells headed for the seven mile miracle.

As the life guards left their towers, Mark Healy and friends grabbed shovels and dug the trench for over an hour before the Waimea estuary began to dribble. Once heavy sand was moved, the force of the river blew out the remaining blockage, and the fresh rain water rolled towards Waimea bay forming chest high peaks.

The board of choice ranged from fins-free squash tails, to boogie boards, to skimboards, but the favorite sled was the Catchsurf board.

To catch the wave, you paddle up-river until you feel the wave begin to hold you in place. Then, pop up keeping your weight forward as not to fall out the back of the wave and get sucked out into the bay. And just like any other wave on the north shore, it flooded with people when word got out that it was pumping.

It only happens a couple times per year, so if you’re ever on the North Shore, ask the locals if they plan to dig the channel

Here are some shots from that day including a stop at the Haliewa Farmers market, cave diving at Shark’s Cove and then back to Waimea for the river surfing session:

Day 1: Jack Johnson Performs at Surfrider Awards in Waimea Bay

The SWELL team is out on Oahu’s North Shore to bring you the exciting events in the epicenter of  surf world. The first part of our “7 Days on 7 Mile Miracle” series features the Surfrider’s 9th Annual John Kelly Environmental Awards.

The ceremony and silent auction went down  in the Waimea Valley Pavilion, and the whole north shore community joined in to celebrate those responsible for protecting the coastal environment.  Attendees enjoyed a surprise performance by Jack Johnson, performing original songs about the harms of single-use plastic, holiday remixes, and his best selling hits.

Mark Cunningham, Peter Cole , and other legends recounted decades of hard fought battles to “keep the country, country” and they awarded  these supporters for maintaining an uncompromising defense of the coast. Do your part showing support with iconic Surfrider apparel here.

Lifetime Achievemnt Award: Cora Sanchez is the co-founder of the Oahu Chapter, and leads the ongoing fight against development.  She also made huge strides in ridding North Shore beaches of plastics  deposited by oceanic gyres from all over the world.

Environmentally Friendly Hawai‘i-Based Company Award: The Kona Brewing Company  promotes sustainable practices at all their facilities and is a long time supporter of Surfrider.   The company helps organize the Kona Brewers Festival, which raises money for educational, environmental and cultural organizations.  The State of Hawaii holds high eco-standards, and Kona leads the charge by using recycled building materials and installing solar  panels at their facilities.

Professional Surfer Award:  Kyle Thiermann created a five-part video series, Surfing for Change, to encourage individuals to change their life habits to help save the environment. Kyle’s video “Where Is Away? Solving Plastic Pollution in 4 Minutes” shows how wasteful and destructive single-use plastics are to the marine environment and encourages people to bring their own reusable bags and bottles.

Check back for day two on the North Shore, Featuring locals surfing in the Waimea River

How to Choose a Wetsuit – 2011 Wetsuit Buyer’s Guide

Shopping for a wetsuit is a lot like shopping for a car. Different cars will be best for different folks. So with that in mind, Like a car finding the “BEST” wetsuit is very subjective and ultimately up to you. Fortunately enough there are a lot of great wetsuits out there so it is hard to go wrong. Wetsuits have progressed a lot from their beaver tail days and finding the right suit is easier than you think.

Most companies come with three or four different levels of suits. You’ll get your high end or Ferrari-Lambo type suits, your midrange or SUV-luxury sedan type suits, and then your entry level or economy type wetsuits. Choosing the right one for you will depend on several factors, which I’ll try to explain below.

Entry level wetsuits: ($150 – $250)

New drivers might drive better (or faster) in a brand new luxury racecar, but it’s often best to start them off in an entry level vehicle. Much like cars, entry level wetsuits are better for those who are either new to the sport or looking for the most economic option. While these suits will not offer the same flexibility, comfort, or performance as the top of the line models, they will get the job done and give the user an idea of the fit and of the other features they’ll want in a future wetsuit.

Here are some examples of the entry level suits:

Billabong Foil Series:
For the price this wetsuit is a steal. Features super stretch throughout, glued and blind-stitched seams and comes in a chest zip option

This Year’s Top 5 Surf Films – The Must Have Surfing DVD’s

With so many amateur video segments popping up all over the internet, it can be truly refreshing when you do finally stumble across a good surf flick. While I enjoy me a good browsing of Marine Layer Productions or the occasional grainy live feed from the ‘CT, there is something to be said about popping a DVD into your player and savoring a crisp, high definition production. Fortunately, this year surf video connoisseurs were able to chew on some pretty tasty video titles. From progressive to artistic and postmodern to just plain fun, here are the top 5 flicks that got us frothing and why.

1) Kai Neville – Lost Atlas:

WHY: Two words: Kai Neville. His first project Modern Collective became the undisputed must-have, cult video of modern surfing. Lost Atlas is equally, if not more, impressive than his first. For this film Kai gathered the original 6 Mod Col crew, a handful of other equally impressive surfing maniacs, and let them loose on a free surfing frenzy. The video is a cocktail of big airs and trash talking yarns set to an incredible soundtrack and stunning visuals. If you had to buy 1 DVD this year, this is it.

Of course, Lost Atlas is available at SWELL!

2) Globe Presents – Year Zero:

WHY: Mad Max meets high performance surfing? Hell yes!! Shot entirely in vivid 35mm film, this one of a kind video features Globe’s impressive surf team tearing up a gritty, post-apocalyptic world. The lifestyle scenes are subtle, yet intoxicatingly vibrant and fun. Plus who doesn’t want to watch Taj and Ceej get barreled with gorgeous ladies in the foreground? Well done Globe!

Of course, Year Zero is available at SWELL!
