Sweater season is upon us, and the newest brand on SWELL upped the Ugly sweater game to epic proportions. Sadly, SWELL sold out of these classic cuts, but we have others here and we’re stoked they killed it in the Shark Tank. Co-founder Nick Mortson breaks it down.
SWELL: First off, Is this Shark Tank show the real deal? Or another phoney reality TV show?
Tipsy: YES IT WAS VERY REAL, WE WERE IN THERE FOR OVER AN HOUR AND THEY ASKED EVERY QUESTION ANY NORMAL VC WOULD ASK. THE EDITORS OF COURSE EDIT IT DOWN TO A 10-15 MIN CLIP SO I THINK THEY TAKE SOME LIBERTIES THERE BUT AS FAR AS DEALS GO ON THE SHOW AND HOW THE DISCUSSIONS AND EVERY THING FEEL IN THE SHOW IT COULDN’T BE MORE REALISTIC. ALSO ABC USED TO TAKE A CUT OF YOUR COMPANY JUST FOR BEING ON THE SHOW BUT THAT IS NO LONGER THE CASE. WE DIDNT GIVE UP ANYTHING TO BE ON THE SHOW OTHER THAN ANY DEALS THAT WERE MADE WITH SHARKS ON THE SHOW
SWELL Stopped by Matix HQ in Los Angeles to sit down with VP of Merchandising and Design Chad Heit. We talk workwear, Matix’s big comeback, then go have a skate in their warehouse.
SWELL: Walk us through your design team’s innovation process for the Holiday 2013 line?
Chad: We start off with a hindsight meeting and go over what did well & what did not for 2012. The designers then do research & inspiration gathering ideas from traveling, web/books/magazines, reference samples (vintage & new), photography, architecture, etc. We also will develop a color story then develop story boards for the season. Steelcraft was one of our themes for Holiday 13 which consisted of casual outdoor & military inspired pieces. (more…)
SWELL: Looks like Stance HQ is under major construction. Big plans, big Growth?
Hennings: 2013 was a huge growth year in revenue and headcount. We added 15 people, and probably another 15-20 next year so we need the space. The new office will be beautiful and really supports our culture and company values. Currently we are building out a 22,000 square foot global headquarters in San Clemente. 1/3 third of the area is dedicated to office and work and 2/3 is dedicated to fun; Basketball court, skate ramp, game center with ping pong, trampoline and air hockey, a bounce house for the kids, family room lounge.
