SeaMade: The Making of “Under Desert Sun” by Kevin Voegtlin

Angola. Do you know where that is? Honestly, I didn’t…that is until I met Kevin Voegtlin, an independent filmmaker who recently made a film about a surf trip to Angola. Last year, Kevin’s buddy Kepa Acero traveled through the Angolan desert on a solo hunt for waves. Surfers in the area pointed him to a left-hand point that wasn’t breaking but he knew deep down that it would fire on the right swell. A few months later, Kepa returned with Dane Gudauskas and they absolutely scored. Kevin’s documentation of the surf trip evolved into his film “Under Desert Sun,” which was just released for your viewing pleasure (see full film above).  I got together with Kevin earlier this week to get a better idea of what this Angola surf mission business is all about. Now go grab your readers for the interview, a brew for the movie, and a map to figure out where in the world Angola is located. (more…)

IMG_0153

We dropped in at RVCA HQ in Costa Mesa to meet the designers behind their insane winter styles, and dig up some stories on these characters who transcend traditional action sports apparel.

SWELL: First off, are you in a ZZ Top coverband, or is that beard resistant to razors?

Mike Gomez: Ha! I wish I was cool enough to be in a ZZ Top cover band. Would you believe it just grows in like this during a full moon? I also develop keen night vision, a strong urge to run, and get really hungry for meat. I’m usually a vegetarian,  I’m not sure what to make of it all. (more…)

Meet Your Maker | Hippy Tree Founder of HippyTree Andrew Sarnecki Talks Origins of the Tribe & Outdoor Inspo

IMG_8229

SWELL stopped by HippyTree HQ in the South Bay to get a tour of their rapidly growing operation,  and the story behind the designs that we can barely keep on the shelves.

SWELL: Give your SWELL fans a quick story about the roots of HippyTree.

Andrew: Kind of a long story, but here it is in a nutshell. I’ve been into graphic design and photography since high school. After college I worked as a wetsuit designer. I had waist length dreads at the time and everyone called me “Hippy”. I started selling tide calendars and t-shirts featuring my art and photography to local South Bay surf shops in 2004. I branded the goods under the HippyTree name. Over the years HippyTree grew and evolved. Today we design and sell 4 seasons of clothing per year. (more…)
