SWELL Snapshot: Chris Burkard Featured SWELL Surf Photographer Breaks Down the Journey In the Dec Catalog

burkard_cover

SWELL stopped by Burkey’s Central Coast Studio to get some insight into his Arctic surf tales seen in the December Catalog. The inaugural Follow the Light grant winner has become a trailblazer for frosty surf expeditions, here’s how the 26 year old surf photo savant keeps crushing it.

SWELL: Explain what kind of trippy Northern Lights magic is going on the cover.

Burkard: This moment was unreal, it was as if the entire sky lit up for me and me alone. 2am… 5 hours before I left for home and the only clear night of the trip. SeaMade: Big Sur

madison lookout_watts
You know it’s time for a road trip to nature when your eyes start sporadically twitching from starting at a screen too much. Which is exactly what a couple of my best friends and I did last week. I hopped on board to Big Sur with staff photographer at Surfline Billy Watts and his girlfriend Jessica for an amazing week of camping, waves, hiking, and relaxing. It was the best vacation a burnt out college student like me could ask for right before finals. The sun blazed, the winds howled offshore, the beer never stopped flowing, and the beaches refreshed our tired bodies. To follow is a highlight reel of our trip, which really does not do the trip or Big Sur justice. The place is frikin’ amazing. Do yourself (and tired eyes) a favor and get there ASAP.

Waimea River Surfing

12

Every winter on the North Shore of Oahu the high surf dams the Waimea river-mouth with sand, and the heavy rains flood the valley. During a flatspell, locals led by Jamie O’Brien happily dig out the channels to create a standing wave to get their feet in the wax in preparation for Pipemasters. It was SWELL’s first time back digging the channel since the 2011 night session, and it was even bigger. (more…)
