GRUNGE: MUSIC FOR YOUR EYES

It’s the magic equation of the growth of the stache, a return to grunge rock and a the whole fixed gear bike gang takeover that spurred the rebirth the flannel, crewneck sweatshirt, greasy hair look. To be honest, I couldn’t be happier. It’s like Kurt Cobain’s thousands of illegitimate spawn came out of the Northwest, grew mustaches, then gave birth to the Black Keys. It’s the look that inspires the “cool guy?” or “homeless?” game. It’s like being in the sweaty mess of the front row of a concert with double headliners Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains, and then the special guest turns out to be Nirvana. It’s the return of the working class look. And thanks to the ladies’ love for filthy rockers and the Hoff’s advocation of man hair, the look trickled down from the flannel-loving Northwest to infiltrate the southern states with a mess of PBR cans, plain tees and grunge cardigans. The culprit of this style leak is still at large, combing his mustache, hiding behind his stringy locks. If you see him, give him a big hug from me, but bathe immediately after.

ASR Fall 2009 Fashion Show

p1230065

This past ASR runway show made one thing clear: Action sports fashion has taken a turn into the unexpected. Most noticeable was that the key trends for Fall ’09 weren’t solely focused on the customary beachy-bohemian look. True, that feel is still there, but it’s apparent these latest offerings are reaching beyond the beach. I saw the styles as more high fashion, edgy, a little rough around the edges—but still earthy and relaxed. There’s no doubt that this is an exciting change, and the modern looks from the variety of  featured brands will add intense versatility to your wardrobe. Case in point, the majority of the collections can be worn during a day at the beach, in the sand and sun. But when embellished with a little personal flare, the line transforms into a trendsetting statement for an evening out. The following images are set to inspire, so sit back and enjoy the view.

GET THE LOOK: COLORED DENIM

blog012809

Flashback! If you picked up a pair of colored denim last year and they’re still sitting in your closet, tags and all, have no fear. This trend had minimal success last season, but come this spring you’ll see it out in full force. Bright yellow (which seems to be a favorite), electric blue, green and red are popping up all over Hollywood’s trendsetters.  I wasn’t sure if I loved or hated this look until its recent comeback. There’s just something about it that’s so easy and appropriate for spring. When planning your outfit, remember three words: Keep It Simple. The bold color statement is enough, so pair them with a solid tee or tank. Have fun with this one, and if you happened to throw yours out from the last time around, Swell is here for you. We have a solid selection in pants and shorts.

STYLE INSPIRATION: JANIS JOPLIN

janis_21

For style that will surely take a little piece of your heart, Janis rocked it. Her signature, free-spirited colors and textures fell into the groove of her soulful vocals with that unmistakable, gravel-voiced overtone. From fringe to ditsy floral, who would have guessed her out-there 60’s style would be so in this spring?  Her bohemian attitude is translated into gauzy cottons, statement-sized beads, leather, tie-dyes, fringed details, and feathers that will flock the runways and rock even pricey New York boutiques this season. It’s the unique mash up of lengths, textures and earthy tones that set the tone for the creative, expressive looks we’ll see this spring. Check out style Janis would have jumped all over on Swell. Get it While You Can.
