Big Sur Day Tripping: Gorda to Nepenthe 3 Must-Stop Central Coast Classics for Surf and Supplies

big-sur-cover

Colton Gabe and Chase made a mission to test drive SWELL’s new gear and see the best Big sur had to offer in a day. Here’s what the boys concluded was the go-to route for scoring is style.

MILE 43: Gorda Fuel Station

The first outpost north of the San Luis Obispo County line lies the most expensive gas in the United States… and the spendiest beer to go with it. In a pinch you can pick up a 6-pack of local firestone beer for a mere $16 and gas is upwards of $10/gal. but a post-surf coldie is priceless.

MILE 49: Sand Dollar Beach

The most consistent sandbar set-up in Big Sur, Sand Dollar offers up tons of rippable empty  peaks just below Plasket Creek Campground. A day pass runs ya $15 these days, but it grants you access to every Ca park for 24 hrs. The Campsite is an epic place to pitch a tent among the redwoods, backpackers, Cal Poly students, and all kinds of road trippers. (more…)

Party Pics: Stab in the Dark Julian Wilson's Cinco De Mayo Party Announcing DHD as the Winning Surfboard

STAB

Last night in Venice SWELL hosted a party with 400 of our closest friends to unveil the best surfboard inthe world. Really, how else would you get an unbiased winner than giving a top WSL surfer 10 unlabeled boards and cutting him loose in Western Australian ramps? Well, the winner was DHD Surfboards and  Daren Handley was over  the moon as he as handed a framed cover of his Stab in the Dark Covershot.

In typical Stab Mag style the party was littered with eager coeds and a cinco de mayo open bar that set the place on fire.  Photos by Matty Wong

It’s 15-ish minutes long and features one of the world’s most technically perfect surfers pushing himself on bespoke (but blind date) surfboards in Western Australia over 10 days. You won’t wanna miss it. We’ll also be dropping a short profile series on the shapers in the coming weeks. Stay tuned. (more…)
