Behind the Cover | Pete Frieden

SWELL welcomes the exotic photo works of Pete Frieden, another lensman carrying on the legacy of Larry “Flame” Moore. After years of working with Flame at Surfing Magazine, he circled the globe covering the World Championship Surfing Tour.

Peter captured these critical images near his home in Bali and Hawaii’s iconic North Shore. Pete gives us some insight into his camera choice on the slab hunting missions in SWELL’s summer catalog.

Exiting the canyon and making our way down Las Virgenes Road, I couldn’t help but reflect on how far we had come. From the campground to our makeshift trail to cliff jumps and stream paddles, we were all feeling really psyched and ready to jump in the ocean. SeaMade: #CityWild 2nd Point Stories of native wanderings by blogger, Madison

The big day had arrived- the day of hiking 10 miles to go surf. Once we set forth from camp, the CityWild crew wandered down Las Virgenes road for about half a mile before dropping into the Malibu Creek Canyon. While walking through an emerald green meadow just off the hot black pavement, I turned and asked Adam, “When does the trail start?” With a sly grin he replied, “I don’t know- you’re on it I suppose”.
