When we mention Kinetik Racing Co. you might be thinking, “Never heard of em..” Well chances are you’ve heard of their A-list team of surfers: Parko, Occy, Bruce & Andy, Luke Egan, Dusty Payne, and Jack Freestone – all KR fins riders.
Current world No. 2 Joel Parkinson shows off his Signature Parko Fin template
Launching in the summer of 2009 KR began making high quality, performance-driven surfing fins with a collaboration of team riders, shapers, and manufacturing elites. After comprehensive R&D and hours of testing out in the field, these fins aren’t just endorsed by their riders, but they are the actual fins ridden in competition and free surf sessions the world over.
Kinetik has a healthy assortment of templates to fit a variety of styles and surfers. From the Occy’s power-surfing to Dusty’s above the lip approach, you’ll find a set to take your surfing to the next level. The best part is that all KR fins come in single and twin tab versions so they will fit both Futures and FCS fin boxes. So grab yourself a set and see why some of the top guys are backing this technology.
Here newly signed team rider and 2010 ASP World Junior Champion Jack Freestone talks about KR:
The 2012 Billabong Pro Tahiti served up far less deadly slabs spilling over the shelf than last year’s Code Red conditions, but the 12 day wait paid off with a peaking swell for the finals. The wave-starved contest highlights mostly consisted of fishing and hiking instagrams around “the end of the road” Teahupoo area, until a solid south swell gave contest director Luke Egan a sigh of relief.
Increasingly intense rumblings on the reef on the eve of the final day yielded the usual flurry of upsets, buzzer beater victories, wipeouts, intense rivalries, and glory for one. Enjoy another Teahupoo barrel bender highlight reel and read more below.
The progressive level of surfing and hi-tech equipment have a direct relationship, and surf companies are in an arms race to develop the best boardies for their teamriders to contort through those bendy barrels. Here’s who’s signature styles carried them to the final rounds.
John John Florence is arguably the sharpest shooting backside barrel rider in the world, and only a lull of a heat could stop his run in the semis. You could see his super stretch O’Neill HyperFreak boardshorts working as he pig dogged past Gabriel Medina and Damien Hobgood. Check out his trunks here.
Joel Parkinson won every heat heading into the final, including a controversial call that got him past an in-form Jeremy Flores by .07pts. He backdoored the peak with the nimble fluidity you’d expect from the young guns, and credits the Flux boardshorts he wears in every trunkable contest. The Flux flex boardshorts are made from recycled plastic bottles which scored him karma points too.

Jeremy Flores won the Andy Irons Award for last years inspiring performance, and the French Pipemaster went on another tear in 2012. Charging every set wave of the building south swell, he suffered some of the longest hold-downs of the event. He would lose the heat to Parko in the quarters, but the ruling was unpopular. Judge for yourself here. During those those long hold-downs, the 4-way stretch shorts minimized ballooning that could pin him to the bottom longer, and allowed him to scratch to the surface quicker.
Check the tech boardshorts.
Taj Burrow took the unconventional approach at Chopes by attacking the lip to put an exclamation point on his wave scores. He was taken down by giant-killing Brazilian Ricardo Dos Santos. His Komplete boardshorts have the function and flare worthy for Taj’s insane approach to any venue.
See the Komplete package here.
Mick Fanning secured his slot atop the standing with multiple last second victories. After everyone suffered infections from reef rash last year, Mick opted for the extra protection from his Rip Curl springsuit. It was all smiles when he took out his best mate from the Gold Coast. Mick and Joel head to Trestles as #1 and #2 ranked surfers in the world.
Labor Day is around the corner and it’s time to gear up for summer’s last hurrah. We went through and picked out the best swag to help you make the most of your 3 day weekend and close down the season with a bang!
1) Billabong Chiller Wetty Bucket
The Chiller Wetty Bucket is part change mat, part dry bag, part cooler and ALL ready for a good time! Load it up with drinks in the AM, cash them off at the beach and then use it to change out of and store your soggy trunks at the end of the day. It will keep your beach beverages cold and your car organized. Brilliant!!
Nothing is more crucial for Labor Day than a solid beach towel. However TowelSafe ups the ante with 3 convenient storage pockets built right into a hefty 30 x 60 inch cotton terry beach companion. Store your cell phone, keys and wallet out of the sand and out of your drenched boardies. It’s a must for busy beaches with potential thieves or your occasional high tide splash.
Lounging is fun and all, but if it’s flat you’ll need something to do in between coldies. A game of Paddle Ball or frisbee will get you up out of your beach chair and rallying across the sand. It’ll give you some added entertainment and maybe even an excuse to bump into that bombshell strolling the beach.
With so many hours in the sun your skin is sure to take a thrashing. If you plan to be in and out of the water all day (and who doesn’t?) then the Vertra face stick will keep you covered. The SPF 50 formula is tough, effective, and will prevent your nose from peeling off like a red onion.
More often than not Labor day hits with barely a ripple in water. Most people write off surfing altogether without considering the alternatives. Enter the Odysea Log by Catch Surf. This beasty soft top will have everyone from beginners to seasoned vets charging the surf no matter what King Neptune dishes out -big or small.
Spent one to many hours in the sun baking that lobstery hide of yours? Well Sun Bum’s Cool Down products will help you out heaps. These lotions sooth the skin and speed up sunburn recovery so you can still hit the bars even after a marathon skin scorching session. Gingers rejoice, pasty kids cheer, Sun Bum lotions save the day!
