LAYNE BEACHLY RETIREMENT RESHIREMENT PARTY

FINISHED WITH THE TOUR, STILL SHREDDING

With seven ASP world titles, countless victories, and the place as the most successful female professional surfer ever, Layne Beachley finally passed on the torch in October of this year. To celebrate her lifetime of accomplishments and her recent engagement to long time boyfriend Kirk Pengilly, friends, family and industry supporters hosted a tear-inducing and bubbly-popping surprise celebration for Layne this past week.  Known for being one of the most prominent cataylsts for the advancement of women’s pro surfing, there was no shortage of surfers and friends to show their support at the Waimea gala.  Included in the guest list were fellow World Champions and friends Lisa Anderson (4x World Champ),  Sofia Mulonovich (1x World Champ), and Stephanie Gilmore (current 2x World Champ), who all dipped their straws in the cocktail-filled ASP world title cup.

To add to the smiles and overall jolly and sentimental mood of the night were the guest’s Layne costumes. The theme of the night was “dress like Layne.” This exploded into a mélange of Oakley and Zinc-faced, bandaged (from the famous fin accident in Japan circa 97’), big bikini-bottomed Layne look-alikes who took the opportunity to add some good-hearted roast-worthy moments to the night’s events. To top off the night, Layne received some great gifts, including a special Pipeline book from Sean Collins and the folks at Surfline in which all the guests from the evening signed. (more…)

MO FUN AT THE SAN DIEGO MOVEMBER GALA PARTÉ

THE TOM SWELLECKS CELEBRATE MOVEMBER

The furry faces of Movember were out in last night full force and half outfits. The annual Movember Gala Parté San Diego brought Mo Bros and some Mo Sisters, all cloaked in moustache disguises to pay homage to their famous moustache inspirations. What is Movember you ask? Movember (the month formally known as November): What began as a creative excuse for a couple of Aussies to adorn a moustache blew up into a moustache growing charity event held during the month of November that has raised over $740k in the US alone for men’s health awareness! Basically, a bunch of otherwise fresh-faced bros sprout a stache and ask friends and family to sponsor the growing of said mo (the Australian slang for moustache), to raise money for men’s health awareness. All the labor of growing the mo, keeping one’s job, girlfriend, or family from hacking it off, and raising money to support the little face warmer is brought to a glorious end at highly anticipated Movember Gala Partés around the globe. It’s the last chance to show one’s newly acquired facial accessory a bangin’ time and pose for a few beer foam-dipped photos before it’s moved down. This year’s San Diego Gala Parté, held at the Bondi in Downtown, brought flocks of mo-growers and supporters, dressed as mo inspiring cops, 70’s athletes, Top Gun pilots, and all things 80’s and filthy. To add to the ruckus were some moustache-loving bunnies; because Playboy Bunnies and mustaches go together like peanut butter and Playboy Bunnies. Fitting 80’s dance music made for a sweat and fur-frenzy that brought out the inner filthy stache in the hordes of furry-lipped fiesta goers. The Tom Swellecks thank Movember, Electric, DC, and all the Mo Bros for making the night another climatic end to the Movember season.
