Kelly Slater Clinches 11th World Title -Tribute to Andy Irons

San Francisco - Exactly one year after the passing of A.I. (the driving force behind Slater’s comeback) Kelly clinched an unprecedented 11th world surfing title. With the first world title ever won on American Soil, KS10 just evolved into KE11y.

After cruising through a breezy bumpy first round, the winds switch off-shore for his second round bout against Aussie Dan Ross. The rifling barrels were shutting down on surfers all morning and his heat was no exception. After a few closeouts, he threw down some of his signature snaps for a come-from-behind victory over Rossy by a single point.

As Kelly delivered his victory speech, world #2 Owen Wright posted the highest wave scores of the event. A respectable response for losing the title race by the second year pro.

The second oldest guy on tour was chaired up the beach for something that we’ll never see again. Statistical probabilities like winning his 11th title on 11/11/11, and dangers like Dusty’s shark sighting enhanced the drama. But the only special coincidences came when he clinched on the one year anniversary of AI’s passing.

A moment of silence for Andy Irons

Kelly published a story this morning about the heavy experiences he and Andy went through.

“I’ve been asked for many opinions and interviews about Andy Irons and the situations and decisions that lead to his early departure from our world. It’s not something I take lightly. I have my own opinions about not only Andy’s choices and how he ultimately got to the place he did”

The Rip Curl Pro Search cemented its claim to hosting a historical series of events with their “floating license” to hold a world tour event in a different location each season. The critics of this year’s big city venues are eating their words with the epic conditions we’ve seen in during this year’s world title race.

And of course people were already asking about his race for #12 during his acceptance speech.

Shark Sighting Clears the Surf at World Championships in San Francisco

“It was the biggest fin I’ve ever seen, and it was coming straight towards me” gasped surfer Dusty Payne after retreating from the competition area in San Francisco’s Ocean Beach surf zone. The surfer hailing from Oahu is no stranger to surfing in the water with sharks and other sea creatures, but he claimed he’d never seen anything on this scale.

Dusty points in the direction of the Shark

After spotting the 12ft great white shark, Payne warned his fellow competitor and photographer, then quickly surfed his way to the sand. The threat was serious enough to make him forget about the $425,000 of prize money up for grabs at the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco. In order for the competitors to re-enter the line-up, lifeguard boats stood guard just outside of the breakers, but claimed they only spotted some dolphins. But who knows…reporting shark sighting is not good for tourism.

A rule was recently drafted to stop competition when sharks are sighted in the line-up, but the local photographer in the water remained, and remarked “Its San Francisco…what do you expect?” On Saturday a surfer was attacked by 9ft great white shark, and survived thanks to the use of surfboard leashed used as tourniquets.

Watch this video edit of the encounter with reactions to the shark toward the end.

The Rip Curl Pro Search is located in a new location each year to test the limits of the world’s top-rated surfers, and shark threats only add to the already dangerous surf of Ocean Beach. During last years competition in Puerto Rico, 3x world champion competitor Andy Irons passed away. Today marks the first anniversary of his passing, and his memory is present in the minds of the competitors.

Premiere Night: Ammo & Shoot the Moon

As summer winds down, September generally marks the beginning of Snowboard movie premieres. Film crews all over the world spent countless hours shooting, editing, and gettin’ down last season so that those of us who crave the snow can get amped for this one. Last night ThirtyTwo and Etnies hosted their movie screening of AMMO and Shoot The Moon at their headquarters in Forest Ranch, CA. A crowd of about 150 frothing spectators gathered around the makeshift, concrete viewing screen on the side of the HQ building to cheer and laugh at yet another successful snowboarding video.

Bobby Martinez Disqualified from Quik Pro NY…Quits Pro Surfing

Whats eating Bobby Martinez? Starting with the “One World Rankings” he is in protest of the new format of ASP rankings that allows surfers on the World Qualifying Series to enter the world tour half way through the season. The one world rankings went into effect last season, limiting some hard-earned Dream Tour careers (think Nate Yeomans) to 6 events. Bobby prefers the traditional format of 45 surfers completing an 11 event season.

But his hostile outspokenness overshadowed his argument in his post-heat victory interview:
“They want to do a halfway cutoff. How the f*** is somebody who’s not even competing against our caliber of surfers ahead of 100 of us on the one world ratings. They’ve never been here. They’ve never f***ing made the right to surf against us, but now we’re ranked upon them. Come on now. That’s Bullshit. That’s why I ain’t going to these stupid contests no more.”

After making those comments, the ASP had a meeting and suspended Bobby from the remainder of the competition and therefore the rest of the year.

It appears that Bobby is having an identity crisis, and he admits that constant competing and traveling since he was 15 has taken a toll on him. Some people are baffled that someone would piss away a life of paid-surfing to exotic places, but the origins of the sport sprouted from guys who rejected the status-quo. His new sponsor “FTW” celebrates anti-establishment lifestyles, and the amount of mentions Bobby gave them makes you think his contract is rich enough to float him after his days in the singlet. Plus is hard to pity a guy who gets 14K just for showing up to the event.

In the ASP’s press release, they claimed Bobby’s was disqualified on the following grounds, “Article 151 has been breached as a result of the numerous comments you made publicly in an interview on the webcast of the current ASP World Tour Event in New York City. The interview was conducted on the event live webcast being watched by a global audience, which includes many young children.”

He’s been ranting about the ASP for months on his all-caps twitter and interviews, but it was his profanity on the live web cast that couldn’t be ignored by Brody Carr. You think they’ll have a 5 second delay next time?

Fans are protesting his dismissal from the event, but he obviously doesn’t want to “bleach my hair blonde, wear tight skinny jeans and put in blue contacts and become a “yes” man” as he ranted on the Channel Islands Blog. Take his world view with a grain of salt because after all, his last pro heat was against Slater, so he put FTW on the map while he could.
