Kelly Slater Continues to Win on his Quad Fin -Advances at Quik Pro New York

The Quiksliver Pro New York kicked off this morning, and the first question the announcers asked was “What fin set-up is Kelly using?” For the third straight event he screwed in his signature FCS K2.1 quad fins, and easily advanced through his round 1 heat. He sent fellow Quik rider and local wild-card Balaram Stack into the losers round. For more contest updates, visit quiksilverpro.com

Critics thought Slater’s fins were too big for the gutless 2-4ft waves, but Kelly anticipates significant swell to move in via Hurricane Katia, and he looks ready to destroy any wave/anyone with his current fin configuration. He forecasts “We’ll find some peaky barrels and we’ll see what happens. I know that Hurricane swell is out there.” Not one to over-hype conditions, we look forward to seeing what Kelly and Katia bring in the coming rounds at the Quiksilver Pro New York.

Kelly Slater Wins Massive Teahupoo

The quad fin set-up has gradually gained popularity in the past few years, and Kelly is taking it to new levels this year as he four-fins his way to winning three straight events in 2ft-TOH surf.

At the Billabong Pro Tahiti Kelly Slater proved once again that he’s the best surfer on the planet. In what many described as the heaviest and most terrifying World Tour Event to date, Slater defeated Aussie surfer Owen Wright at the 2011 Billabong Pro at Teahupoo. On a board much smaller than his competitors’ and ridinghis signature K2.1 quad fin set-up, Slater weaved through slabby, 6-12ft barrels to claim his 2nd World tour Victory this year.

FCS K2.1 Quad Fins

Of his fin choice the 10x World Tour Champ said, “I rode my K2.1 Quad set-up for the entire event, it felt really fast and comfortable in the tube. The quad set-up seems to provide a little more security especially in the barrel, it also gives you more control when you’re riding a shorter board.”

Not only did this choice of equipment propel him at the infamous reef pass, but it also helped him win at the sloppy 2-4ft beach break surf at the US Open of Surfing as well. There, with the same K2.1 set-up, Kelly both won the event and pulled off one of the craziest maneuvers in the competition’s history by landing a no grab, backside 360 during a heat (This was against yet another hyper-progressive Lost Atlas surfer, Dusty Payne).

These wins have put Slater at the top of the World title ratings and it seems like only a matter of time before we start seeing the KE-11-Y flags being raised. In an interview in Tahiti he remarked “Since there’s no other multi-contest winners at this point in the year, it’d be almost impossible to catch up if I had three wins after New York.”

Kelly’s signature FCS K2.1 fins are available at SWELL in a variety of set-ups, including Quad, Thruster, and Tri-Quad

Cardiff Kook Attacked Again

Another sneak attack hit the “Cardiff Kook” Saturday night, and some are calling it the best yet. Repeat offending pranksters transformed the poop-stanced landmark into the land before time, erecting a pterodactyl swooping in on the kook.
cardiffkook
The statue is regularly targeted for its novice looking pose in such close vicinity to one of surfing’s high-performance meccas.

On the corner of PCH & Chesterfield in Cardiff By The Sea, Ca. there was another wave of rubbernecking traffic jams to witness the scene. On what looks like a set of a children’s play, the Cardiff Kook’s shoulders are held by the talons of the flying dino, surrounded by a host of other creatures, trees, and a backdrop of erupting volcanoes. How on earth they pull this off again?

These creative antics have become a local tradition since the city installed the $120,000 “Magic Carpet Ride” statue in 2007. Countless attacks on the kook recently resulted in $3,200 in repairs that upset tax-minded residents. But the real locs defend these symbolic assaults on the style-less surfer, “The Duke would roll over in his grave if he saw some limp-wristed surf statue stick his ass out like he was doing the thizzle dance” heckled Jon Ross of Solana Beach.

.

The city has since taken down the prehistoric diorama, and are now discussing fines for Cardiff surfer Eric Hardtke, who also erected the 20 ft shark swallowing the kook last summer.

Tearing down the papier-mâché artwork cost the city a couple hundred dollars in labor, but neighboring businesses report 25% boosts in sales when people flock to witness a new costume for the kook.

What do you think: No serious harm, or cause for alarm?

Follow The Light 2011 Surf Photography Awards -Tonight in Huntington Beach

Swell proudly sponsors another talented class of up-and-coming surf photographers for this year’s Follow The Light Foundation grant, in memory of Larry “Flame” Moore.

The foundation has a reputation for identifying future industry pioneers such as Chris Burkard and Todd Glasser. The $5,000 grant encourages winners to continue pushing the boundaries of surf photography that legendary lensman “Flame” made his life’s work.

Follow The Light 2011

This year’s event is open to the public tonight at 7pm at the Huntington Beach Shorebreak Hotel’s Main Ballroom. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to preview the future of surf photography during the biggest action sports festival in the world, The US Open of Surfing. Every year the world best surfers show up to see which photog they want to travel with in order to get their next cover shot.

Let us know who you think has the passion to take this years 5k grant donated by Swell.com. Click their names to see profolo submissions. Here’s what inspires these young lensmen:

Carlos Santana
“The feelings that I get through my photography are what fuel my passion. The most joy that I experience happens when I’m swimming in the ocean with my camera because I simply feel free and in love with what I’m doing and when I’m doing it.”

Matt Kurvin
“I spent a lot of time on the beach and in the water watching 6 inch waves peel, wishing I was small enough to ride them. I was never able to describe to people the way I saw things, especially in the ocean. It wasn’t until photography entered my world that I was finally able to do so.”

Quincy Dein
“As a photographer, I feel successful when the person viewing one of my images takes a moment to rethink what is possible. I want to inspire people to go outside, to enjoy life, and to explore.”

Ricky Lesser
He has traveled the world, photographing some its most unique locations and people. Lessers’ unique ability to craft story through imagery is second only to his unbridled optimism and enthusiasm for life. He currently resides in Manhattan Beach, surrounded by his greatest muses – his wife Bekah, son Noah and the enduring, domineering Pacific.

Duncan Macfarlane
“During high school I doodled with some smaller point and shoot cameras and then a Nikonos V, which I flooded because I knew nothing of seals and water photography. That prompted me to get a DSLR and from there I have been shooting for the last few years learning as I go.”
