Ryan Craig Wins 2014 Follow the Light Award Event Photos from the Most Prestigious Award in Surf Photography

Happy Days lie ahead for Ryan “Chachi” Craig, winner of the 9th annual Follow the Light Foundation Awards in memory of Larry “Flame” Moore. The 32 yr old Santa Cruz photog cracked the final 5 a few times since 2008 and now joins past winners club of legendary lensmen like Burkard, Glaser, Maasen and more.

The epic event was followed by a typical US Open Afterparty at the pope’s living room, the Surfing Magazine Oasis of insanity. Shots, see-throughs, cervezas and the eventual late night eats… Chachi killed it! (more…)

Back button auto-focus is your friend. I’m sure at this point we all know that on a majority of digital SLR cameras – you have two different buttons to press to activate the auto-focus. The shutter button when pressed half way and the button on the back of your camera named AF-On (I’m referring to Canon DSLRs). (more…)

I love the look of backlit surf. Shooting backlit waves will reward you with unique illumination to your photos, and simplify subjects into artsy silhouettes. Some of my most favorite images are backlit. There is a technique that I love to use every once in a while that gives my backlit images a bit more spice.
