Random runs.
Ok, this is a total personal preference post, per say. (Say that five times fast). But some of the best, most invigorating and motivating runs I’ve had in my life, were completely out of the blue, off the beaten path, or not pre meditated whatsoever.

We’re talking laying on the beach on a Saturday, standing up, and deciding to go for a quick run. Or driving home from work, and pulling over to do a trail run. Or one of my favorites, being in a new city and just going out and exploring the area with my own (very quickly moving) two feet for a little bit. In fact, I recommend keeping a pair of running shoes in your car at all times for this very reason.

I think what I like about this type of workout is this: Instead of driving to the gym to do a 30 minute run on the treadmill three scheduled days a week, it’s making fitness be a part of your daily life. A random run is as enjoyable to me as, let’s say, an out of the blue stop for some coffee, or a quick stop at your favorite boutique, or watching that fifth episode in a row of your favorite TV show you stream on Netflix (Friday Night lights. I miss you).

Random runs (to me) are a way of saying, hey I’ve made it to the point where I really DO enjoy being active, and it’s not a chore, but a way of life.

Hope that makes sense. Because I love them.
…in fact I might just go on one now.

Somewhere along the way it became the norm to scrutinize and hate every part of our bodies. When, in fact the human body is a remarkable machine, capable of many great things. Wearing a bikini is waaaaaaay down the list in terms of its accomplishments, yet that seems to be how we judge our bodies worth. I understand that’s part of living nowadays (thank you ads, social media, and photoshop for all distorting our view on this subject 24/7 )…and quite honestly, it stinks. So, I’d like to try and at least switch our focus around. Because I’m an optimist, and that’s what I do.

So here’s a little challenge…. (more…)

#SWELLivin: Smile.

Remember to look up and smile.

Sometimes the best ideas just hit you over the head out of nowhere, and really are quite simple. Such is the case with my beloved Palm Tree smile artwork, photo/design/ whatever you want to call it.

If you happen to get the SWELL catalog this month, a post card, that you can keep around as a smile inducer, juuuuust might happen to fall out, surprise you as you turn the pages, or arrive in your mailbox if you have a cool thoughtful friend who wants to brighten your day.

So, I figured I’d let you all in on the story behind the design that’s been making the rounds. Because I kind of love it.

In Hawaii, the beach park by my house had a gorgeous palm tree (one of the tall skinny swaying ones) that I’d go sit under after a long day, or just to take a nap, read a book, etc. I always took a bunch of pics of it, especially at sunset, because it would be a perfect silhouette. The tree (and palm trees in general) made me smile. Then I realized, in the pics where it was just the tree, well, heck it could double as the letter i. The tree made me smile, it’s also an i. Yhatzee, we have a winner.  I made the graphic and posted it.  No more lonely palm tree pic, and instead it’s something that is making people smile all over.

Which I absolutely love.

Walking. It’s therapy, exercise and healthy living, just by using your own two feet.

Had a bad day? Take a walk. Need to de-stress? Take a walk. Don’t feel like working out? Take a walk. In a sad or gloomy mood? Take a walk. Feeling lazy? Take a walk. Craving a hefty serving of something sweet? Take a walk.  Craving a Super Big Gulp? Take a walk. Sat at a desk staring at a computer screen for 8 hours straight? Take a walk. Too sore from yesterday’s insanely tough workout to even move today? Take a walk. Husband didn’t notice you cut off 6 inches of hair and dyed it red? Take a walk. Got dropped in on about five times by the same agro guy surfing in his competition jersey from 2003? Paddle in and take a walk.

It’s amazing what a simple solution, to so many things, taking a good long walk can do.

I’m off to take one now… I’ll let you guess which one of the above related to me. Or two.
