sector 9 longboard skateboards

Big up’s to our good buddies at Sector 9 for their recent partnership with Billabong. The big B had the good sense to buy S9 this past week, proving to the world that we should bomb hills, not countries. We just received five new Sector longboards last week, and let me tell you our knees haven’t been this bruised since our sorority days.

hurley ramones joey ramone clothing

While the entire line is still trickling in, we finally received our first shipment of Hurley’s long awaited Ramones collection. Featuring a limited number of guys and girls tees, hoodies and accessories, the gear pays homage to the sights and sounds that surrounded the New York leather punks during their reign from 1974 - 1996. (On a side note, it may interest you to know that none of the founding members were actually related. Additionally, bassist Douglas Colvin, aka Dee Dee, was the first to use the name Ramone, after learning that Paul McCartney used the pseudonym Paul Ramon. Thanks Wiki!)

KOBY ABBERTON, HANDS DOWN

June 25th, 2008 by M. Night Bassett in the FOAM category

Koby Abberton

(Written by Elizabeth Park for Foam)

Mark Whalberg is slated to play Koby Abberton in the Hollywood biopic Bra Boys, due out next summer (produced by Brian Grazer and directed by Russell Crowe). Whalberg wishes he were as cool as Koby. The upcoming film, and documentary of the same name, (released last year to film festivals, and coming out on DVD in early May), is the story of the Australian Maroubra beach gang known as the Bra Boys, led by Sunny Abberton and his brothers Koby and Jai. Since the doc’s release, their notorious tale-tragic, heroic, complicated- has been sensationalized by the media and fans alike, and repudiated by local police. SPAIN’S YANKEE DOODLE

Spain’s Yankee Doodle

(Written by Zoe Buck for FOAM)

Instead of relying on supermodels or celebrity spokeswomen, the ever-innovative, Irvine-based clothing label Element Eden commissions so-called Advocates to both represent the brand and inspire its loyal customer base.

The newest woman to hold that distinction is Spain’s Pepa Prieto, who makes madcap sprawling drawings and exuberant bright paintings. Her energetic work recalls a child genius on a doodling binge, but Prieto herself is playful and grounded. In touch with her inner kid, but most decidedly a girl- power role model.

We had Zoe Buck try and figure out what makes Prieto tick. Click here to read the rest of the article →

TREND: GLADIATOR SANDALS MARCH ON

June 17th, 2008 by M. Night Bassett in the STYLE category

heidi_klum400.jpg

So gladiator sandals have been hot for several months now with no signs of slowing. Well loved by starlets, models and mall rats, we’re betting this look is going to stick around and eventually become a staple. Which is kinda funny considering when they first became popular in 1987, they were mostly favored by promiscuous teens who wore them with spandex minis. True story. Now a days they can be seen on the red carpet and beach boardwalks around the world. Naturally, as the world’s premiere online surf apparel shop, we’ve been all over the trend since day one and are super stoked about this super cute and super affordable pair from Steve Madden.

NEW TO SWELL: HIPPY TREE

June 11th, 2008 by M. Night Bassett in the HOLLA, STYLE category

him0101sav_hl_dt.jpg

Though formally founded in 2003 by South Bay surfer and artist Andrew Sarnecki, HippyTree more accurately began in early 2000 with a twenty-one-year-old Sarnecki who, at the time, sported waist-length dreads and a car full of spray-paint cans, surfboards and cameras. “Hippy,” the name Sarnecki’s friends fittingly called him, also marked his half-ironic graffiti moniker. DESIGN FOR HUMANITY 2008

June 6th, 2008 by M. Night Bassett in the EVENTS, MUSIC, STYLE category

dfh11.jpg

When it comes to giving back, no one makes it look as good as Billabong. Building on the success of last year’s wildly popular launch party for their new charitable division, Design For Humanity, this year’s bash was regarded as the biggest industry fundraising event of the season. Going down this past Thursday at the Avalon/Spyder Club in Hollywood, lucky attendees saw renowned DJ Steve Aoki in full force, along with the tragically hip MGMT. Guests also viewed specially commissioned art from Wolfgang Block and Chris Jordan, as well as a rare collection of surf photos from world class photographers Rob Gilley, Dustin Humphrey and Steve Sherman. But the night’s main event was the fashion show featuring one-of-a-kind pieces that were revamped from Billabong’s current spring and summer lines. This all-star party was made truly unique with the art, photos, and fashion available for auction on Ebay with 100% of the proceeds benefiting The Surfrider Foundation. Our every ready girl-about-town Elsa was their with camera and cocktail in hand. Check out her exclusive pics and videos.
